The final Death Knell of a free press
will be the suppression of political cartoons. Keep your eye on the editorial cartoonists. They are our last bastion of free expression in the press. More than any other group in the media, they have done the best job of shining a light on the malfeasance of the Bush administration.

1. Is this happening?
Is this in reference to the Danish Cartoons?

Or is this just a generalized statement (in which case I somewhat agree)?

2. First they came for the Danish and I did not speak out. . . .
Once they get their foot in the door, they will take it as far as they can.

3. Just a general statement...
Bad me, the Danish cartoons didn't even enter my consciousness when I wrote this.

4. The WaPo announced Boondocks is ending
Just this morning I read in the Washington Post that Aaron McGruder, the creator of the "Boondocks" comic strip, will stop doing the strip in a couple of weeks.

It's supposed to be a creative sabbatical like the ones taken by Gary Larsen - "The Far Side" - and the guy who draws "Opus" and used to do "Bloom County."

I hope this is what the artist says it is, and not the result of political pressure.

5. Speaking of which...
I didn't see "Tom the Dancing Bug" in last Friday's (February 24) WaPo "Weekend" magazine. What's up with that? Donald Graham unhappy?

7. My family usually grabs the Weekend section
before I can read "Tom," so I don't know what's happened.

11. The death knell of freedom of the press is when the government arrests
reporters and shuts down media outlets, like the Perons did to La Prensa.

Corporate press may fall to pressure from politicians to not criticize, but there will always be alternative outlets telling the full story. If there aren't, and it's because the government shut them down and took away their staff, then freedom of the press is over.
