I was sub-teaching in a public school in an affluent community in New Jersey yesterday. I looked at a poster of the U.S. Presidents. Each President had a caricature of his head and in the background, something to symbolically link the President to his time or greatness or both.
Here is a sample of what I saw:
*: oilwells (ironic considering Arbusto, etc., eh?)
Bill Clinton: a map of Arkansas
GHW Bush: a map of the Mid-East
Jimmy Carter: the Stars & Stripes in the breeze
Lyndon Johnson: the Capital Building
Hoover: the Hoover Dam
McKinley: a map of the Philippines
And possibly my "favorite": Andrew Jackson with 2 sabers and arrows crossed against each other AND a banner reading "The Union Must Be Preserved".
Can you imagine how long it will take these kids to get accurate information about their history, if they even care to find out (see articles today re more familiarity with The Simpsons vs. The Bill of Rights).
