I'm doing a research paper on Watergate and need info

Hi guys.

I'm writing a research paper for a college class on Watergate.

My research topic is "What was Watergate," and I need some pointing in the right direction.

I was just hoping some of you guys who lived through that era (or are simply knowledgeable) could help a young one out.

If you know of any great periodicals or books or websites to check out, let me know, and especially if you have stories to share about the Watergate era and what that was like for America, I'd love to hear those too!

1. I would start at your campus library

Do a basic data base search to see what titles the library has to offer you.


Check out Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States, look in the Index under "W" --there are several pages devoted to it.

3. a little personal note

The hearings were televised live everyday. I don't remember what channel was carrying them, (there weren't that many then). I worked in a hospital at the time, and they were on in all the patient's rooms, so I got a chance to listen during work. People were mesmerized. We were never "in on" the working of government to this degree before. The most stunning moment for me was when Butterfield, when asked about the existence of tape recordings in the oval office, said "I was hoping you weren't going to ask me that".. and then spilled the beans.

6. It started out with all 3 major networks carrying them.

As the hearings went on they worked out a deal where they rotated coverage days between them (this way the soap opera fans and sponsors were kept happy.)

I remember sitting in a lounge at the student union at the U of Minn which was packed with people watching the hearing. I think it was while John Dean was testifying. The room was so quiet that the person running the candy counter must have thought everyone was asleep because she walked over to the TV and changed the channel. You never saw a room come alive so fast. Luckily she switched the channel back fast I'm not sure she would have gotton out there alive if she hadn't.

7. Part of the point of the research paper is to acquaint you with research

methods.

I'd suspect that an internet community query doesn't count as a research method in a history class, unless you were doing some kind of survey of that community.

Maybe starting with the research resources at your campus library would be a better idea?

I must say it's harder to read Woodward now that he has almost zero credibility.

or NY Times. You should be able to get access to their archives from your library free of charge.

20. I Agree With That....

I even thought about Woodward's street cred as I typed it.

At the end of "All the President's Men" movie, a detailed listing of everything that happened to those involved in the crime/conspiracy/cover-up rolls with the credits. You may want to rent the movie, and watch that ending.

"All The President's Men," by Woodward and Bernstein. I seriously recommend the book, and then the film, but, if you're short of time, see the movie.

Then you'll have the entire story.

While you're doing your research, pay particular attention to Judge John Sirica, who was, in my opinion (I was a law student when Watergate first broke), the one person who busted this whole mess wide open when he refused to let the Watergate burgulars cop to pleas that he believed to have been coerced, especially after James McCord wrote him a letter about what had really happened.

Also, find out what happened to McCord's wife - she died in a plane crash in Chicago - and consider how much cash she was carrying at the time of the crash.

It's a wonderful mystery story, but you have got a great big research job in front of you. You're gonna love it.

18. Hey, Mark Felt lived in my building

We both owned condos in a place in Alexandria, Virginia called - I kid you not - Watergate At Landmark.

He was such an unfriendly prick. Everyone hated him.

His wife committed suicide, and then he moved away somewhere.

But, I honestly thought L. Patrick Gray was Deep Throat. Not Mark Felt. Not at all.

Ever notice how all those sleazy guys had name was were "Initial, Name, Surname"?

17. When they released the first transcriptions of "the tapes"

they had been so heavily edited (censored) that it was hard to find more than two sentences in a row that made sense. Stuff blacked out, stuff deleted, all kinds of hamfisted efforts to prevent you from reading what those mofos said.

It was HILARIOUS.

My boyfriend and I got kicked out of our college library because we were laughing our @sses off and were too loud. We couldn't help it!
