7. The day or days before the storm I was having a conversation about

the potential devastation that our CANADIAN MEDIA was talking about could
happen with this one. I remember distinctly being at an arena, at our sons
summer hockey game, and chatting with some of the parents about the pending
storm. We were talking about how the city could fill up like a bowl and how
it is projected to be the worst in their history. ( - I'm in Canada and new this)..
I was so concerned about this storm, I stayed up til 4:00am to witness the whole thing
unfold. I also remember around 10:00pm or so (if I'm not mistaken - could be later -
Jeanne Meserve's devastating report as she floated in a boat at night explaining the
unfolding disaster in tears.

I'm just your neighbor, but I feel I knew more about what was coming..that's nuts.

I was home sick with a terrible cold and pretty much watched CNN 24/7 the whole weekend and M/T. It was absolutely terrifying, thinking that those people were going to sit it out in the Superdome. It was like a horror movie. And that Jean Meserve report was harrowing. It was about how they kind of stopped reporting while the cameraman joined the rescue effort and tried to save people and they could hear them calling for help all over the place and it was so dark there was really nothing they could do.

in showing the potential devastation and their coverage was excellent. I, too, stayed up, watching in horror, as the disaster unfolded and got little sleep over the next days and nights as the catastrophe worsened.

FORT LAUDERDALE -- Although sloppy and relatively weak, Hurricane Katrina ravaged South Florida Thursday with driving rains and gusts of more than 90 mph, killing at least four people, collapsing a highway flyover and leaving more than 1 million homes and businesses without power.

A family of 5 also was reported missing aboard a 24-foot boat that left Marathon early Thursday morning on their way to Cape Coral.

Katrina had weakened into a tropical storm over land, but strengthened over the warm waters of the gulf and became a hurricane again early Friday with top sustained winds of 75 mph. At 9 a.m. EDT, it was about 45 miles north-northwest of Key West and 65 miles south-southwest of Naples. It moving erratically toward the west at 6 mph in the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters said Katrina would likely get stronger and perhaps make a second landfall in the Florida Panhandle early next week.

The eye of Katrina made landfall about 6:30 p.m. Thursday near the county line between Broward and Miami-Dade, moving southwest across Miami-Dade and dumping as much as 15 inches of rain.

The National Hurricane Center measured gusts up to 91 mph at the southeast eyewall, while early reports had gusts reaching 92 mph in Fort Lauderdale, 68 in Miami, 61 mph in Davie and 63 mph in Miami Beach

Point being, don't let anyone, ANYONE try to lay blame on the state & local governments, since they anticipated and declared that any relief efforts would be BEYOND THEIR CAPABILITIES.

So, when disaster struck, and relief efforts DID in fact exceed their capabilities, what do we hear? "Oh look at the pathetic state and local government reponse"
