Japanese automakers sweep U.S. rivals

GM and Ford are dead folks, time to buy Foreign brands built in America.

Japanese automakers achieved another milestone in the ongoing humiliation of their U.S. counterparts Wednesday as they captured the top positions in all 10 vehicle categories rated by influential Consumer Reports magazine.

It was the first time in the nine-year history of the respected annual survey that Asian nameplates swept the list of “best” automobiles, which the magazine selects from among a slate of more than 230 vehicle models based on a series of 150 tests, ranging from braking distance to crash ratings and fuel efficiency.

Why is now anything different, particularly when GM is known for making second-rate rubbish?

4. AH but that's the point: buy the "foreign" built in the USA ones.

Like some of the Toyotas, the BMW's, etc. America can build good cars. It's been proven time and time again. It's just that in the end, someone else will own the automotive industry here. It's already happened in Britain, the last UK mass-produced car manufacturer (Rover) went into bankruptcy (and unlike bankruptcy in the US, the UK people tend to liquidate things). Now it's owned by the Chinese. Any major auto works in the UK are now not owned by UK entities. The Mini - classic British design and built in Britain - owned by BMW (well at least we can say it's European). Honda build some of their cars in the UK. Even the French Peugeot build some of their cars in the UK.

Certainly the UK is known for good car design and technical innovation. It just doesn't have a single mass manufacturer anymore.

If Ford and GM go the way of the dodo - and there's a long way before we say that yet - then it is possible that there will be no mass produced cars made where it is owned by the country of origin. However given the size of America and the economy it has to go a long way before that happens. GM has a lot of fat it can trim, and Ford is at least learning from its acquisitions.

2. Yes but, when a GM/Ford crashes, there's 1000 lawyers to protect Ford/GM

for every engineer layed off who could have worked to insure the Ford Explorer was designed right the first time. Quality was never job one!

Businessmen and lawyers have jobs in this country. Scientists and engineers don't. Guess why America is failing.

5. ford and gm are not going away any time soon

they are both world wide corps who are based in the usa but design cars for different cars for different markets. we here in the states get the crappy versions of the good cars built overseas. ford focus in europe is a shit kicking car and the g series gm cars in australia are alot better than the ones here. my family has had a few problems with the 15+ Chrysler products we have had in the last 20 years and that`s no better or worse than the 15 honda products in those years.the cost of parts and repairs are the same and we`ve gotten the same amount of mileage out of them before they were hauled away.
it`s not the workers it`s the management that stymies ford and gm from making a world class car.
