WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney urged Americans Thursday to do a better job of saving and challenged policymakers to strengthen pensions and fix Social Security to help people in their golden years.

``The American dream begins with saving money and that should begin on the very first day of work,'' Cheney told a conference here exploring how to encourage people to boost savings and be better prepared for retirement.

Too often, workers are living paycheck to paycheck and are not saving sufficiently, Cheney said.

Most people who are living from paycheck to paycheck and not saving are doing so because the cost of housing, gas, utilities and food are astronomical and the bottom half of Americans' incomes have not even come close to keeping up, in large part because of REPUBLICAN CEOs trying to keep payroll costs down, in spite of record profits, and because of REPUBLICAN unwillingness to raise the paltry minimum wage. It is not a matter of people being spendthrifts, as this idiot implies.

Most people here in the SF Bay area spend more than half their income on housing costs, when most budget advisors say that should be less than 1/3. Health insurance can easily eat up 1/4 of a typical worker's income.

I suppose Cheney thinks these people should economize by living in their cars so that they can sock away a few bucks?

God I hate these people.
