The ARROGANCE of these people! 'Cheney Urges Americans to Save More'
Like people have enough money to save after they pay the freakin' mortgage, heating bill, gas bill, college tuition, grocery bill, health care insurance, and everyday expenses??? WHO THE FUCK IS THIS MILLIONAIRE TO TELL ANYONE THEY SHOULD SAVE MONEY? Does he really think people just don't WANT to save for their furture?:grr: Unbelievable. Last year the savings rate dropped to its lowest point since the depression! I wonder why???????*&^%$#

Cheney Urges Americans to Save More
By JEANNINE AVERSA

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney urged Americans Thursday to do a better job of saving and challenged policymakers to strengthen pensions and fix Social Security to help people in their golden years.

"The American dream begins with saving money and that should begin on the very first day of work," Cheney told a conference here exploring how to encourage people to boost savings and be better prepared for retirement.

Too often, workers are living paycheck to paycheck and are not saving sufficiently, Cheney said.

Last year, Americans' personal savings rate dropped to its lowest point since the Great Depression. The dismal state of savings comes as a big wave of baby boomers will soon start retiring.<snip>

1. I am in no position to save right now
I am a college student and all the money i get from working goes to putting food on the table, paying for my music books and traveling for auditions. Fuck that man and i hope he experiences a dip in his funding. He has some nerve.

13. it's just a bizarre bizarre statement he makes
he says we should be saving from the first day of work, my first day of work i was making 75 cents an hour under the table as a babysitter, even in my first "legal" job, i earned only a little more than $2 an hour, he thinks people should be saving more than $10K a year every year for their working lives, that is just nuts in a world where minimum wage is $5.45 an hour!

young people need to pay for necessities and their education, and then establishing a family & buying a home

you cannot just start saving huge amounts of money for retirement and still actually have a life in your youth, incomes are not high enough to allow it

if he wants people to save then he needs to do something abt the minimum wage and the outsourcing/illegal immigration issues that pull down american incomes

testing -- i think it will go straight to the story in question

3 out of 5 americans save less than $10K a year, sez them, heck, i would have thought it was a lot more than that, who has $10K a year just to sit around being "saved"?

4. We can't save because for many of us, we run out of money
at the same time, or even before, we run out of month! That's what it means to live from paycheck to paycheck, for cripe's sake, but what would Oil Baron Darth Cheney know about that? Don't you just love it when rich people tell you how you aren't managing your totally crappy finances correctly?

5. Shouldn't he have to
balance the federal budget before he tell America how to run their finances?

Save money, fix social security and pensions. Good but rather empty advice.

9. Do as I say,
not as I do. Dickie is another one who parrots Reagan's line "DEFICITS DON'T MATTER." Saving wasn't your priority when you had surpluses in 2001.

"Too often, workers are living paycheck to paycheck and are not saving sufficiently, Cheney said"

WHEN YOU WORK TWO JOBS JUST TO SURVIVE YOU HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO SAVE, ASSHOLE!

Who the f*** are you to lecture ME on saving money!
Tell me something, smart guy-why are these people that are spending all their spare cash not driving around in ferrari's and living in mansions

The flow of money is what drives the economy
this economy is stagnant!
because people ARE NOT spending money
BECAUSE THEY HAVE NONE TO SPEND!

16. Only if we could receive a break.
Everything cost so much. I do think though, that this is a distraction to help us feel incompetent. Secondly they could show us lesser folks how they, Wall Street, can help us via our social security.

:grr: The MAJORITY of citizens are AGAINST doing anything to SS except FUNDING it. If they took back 1% of the freakin' tax breaks for the wealthy, SS would be FINE.

32. They're just trying to cover the fact that China OWNS us...
Thom Hartment brought up some good points about this in an article posted on Common Dreams yesterday. Basically, it's because of Dick and his ilk that we are saving so little today. We have low paying jobs and no unions to guarentee a living wage.

http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0227-20.htm

<SNIP>Through a combination of the "Fast Track" authority pushed for by Reagan and GHW Bush, sweetheart trade deals involving "most favored nation status" for dictatorships like China, and Clinton pushing us into NAFTA and the WTO (via GATT), we've abandoned the principles of tariff-based trade that built American industry and kept us strong for over 200 years.

The old concept was that if there was a dollar's worth of labor in a pair of shoes made in the USA, and somebody wanted to import shoes from China where there may only be ten cents worth of labor in those shoes, we'd level the playing field for labor by putting a 90-cent import tariff on each pair of shoes. Companies could choose to make their products here or overseas, but the ultimate cost of labor would be the same.

Then came the flat-worlders, led by misguided true believers and promoted by multinational corporations. Do away with those tariffs, they said, because they "restrain trade." Let everything in, and tax nothing. The result has been an explosion of cheap goods coming into our nation, and the loss of millions of good manufacturing jobs and thousands of manufacturing companies. Entire industry sectors have been wiped out.

These policies have kneecapped the American middle class. Our nation's largest employer has gone from being the unionized General Motors to the poverty-wages Wal-Mart. Americans have gone from having a net savings rate around 10 percent in the 1970s to a minus .5 percent in 2005 - meaning that they're going into debt or selling off their assets just to maintain their lifestyle.

At the same time, federal policy has been to do the same thing at a national level. Because our so-called "free trade" policies have left us with an over $700 billion annual trade deficit, other countries are sitting on huge piles of the dollars we gave them to buy their stuff (via Wal-Mart and other "low cost" retailers). But we no longer manufacture anything they want to buy with those dollars.

When does the Revolution begin to equal out every Citizen's net worth or implement the following?

Health Care (shall return to the health of the patient, rather than a business), education (college degree shall replace high school diploma as necessity), our civilian infrastructure (self explanatory), and new technology development (to replace over aged oil baron mentality) all shall have a mandatory priority over the military industrial complex and defense spending.

Don't like it? Tough shit, several million have neither a voice or choice about what they like. The days of protecting a few at the expense of the many shall be over.
