I have been in and out of town for the past 2-3 weeks

Catching a few minutes to read and post here and there.
I did have a chance to re-read some of "1984", and this passage--in particular--stuck out.
"We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture."

This is our present government in a nutshell.
Now we must ask ourselves if this is acceptable.

My answer is that it is not.
