Coyote Ugly bar not welcome in KC
Village West is no place for Coyote Ugly, plan board says
By MARK WIEBE
The Kansas City Star

Coyote Ugly Saloon is the kind of business that Village West typically courts: unique to the Kansas City area, nationally known and capable of drawing large crowds.

It’s also a business where it is said female bartenders taunt their male clientele, shots are poured into customers’ mouths and women dance on the bar, occasionally shedding their bras (though not their shirts).

Or, as Washington Post columnist Joel Achenbach more simply put it, Coyote Ugly is an “in-your-face bartop-babe whiskey-saloon.”

That reputation for entertainment fueled by alcohol and sexual tension may be enough to keep the bar from coming to Village West, the fast-growing retail development in Kansas City, Kan. On Monday, the city’s Planning Commission voted 6-3 to recommend that the Unified Board not grant a special-use permit for the bar. Planning Commissioners Micky Davis, Ann Dercher and Cardelia Walker opposed the motion.

1. Village West is too far away anyway.

There are plenty of perfectly fine strip clubs right here in the city.

edit: for those that don't know, Village West is in western Wyandotte County, Kansas, next to the Kansas Speedway, Nebraska Furniture Mart and the massive Cabela's. Not exactly in the heart of the metro area.

3. Agreed. It's too far from the main metro area and I think people
would get smashed out there and drive home. Even if you could get a taxi out there, it would cost you an arm and a leg to get home.

It's a good fit for the Nascar crowd, but would probably be better "served" near the new arena downtown. I'd say being able to grab a cab outside the door is a must for a bar of this sort.

7. The promise of the Truman Sports Complex
was a development boom in the surrounding area. It never happened. Oh, wait, the I-70 Drive-In went from one screen to four.
I want at least baseball downtown or on the riverfront.

8. Agreed. Baseball needs to be downtown.
And I think the Chiefs would be well-suited near the Speedway.

I guess that Coyote could work there as well, but only if they figure out some freakin' public transit out to the area.

9. I can't afford the Chiefs.
But I love going to baseball games. Riding a train to the park on the river would be great.

6. I hate driving over there.
And none of it is my cup of tea, anyway.
I get enough lunatic drivers in the city.

2. That'll teach you
to buy a franchise...why not invent your own in-your-face bartop-babe whiskey-saloon?
