Flying Spaghetti Monster bumper sticker sighting!!
A young neighbor I know, with whom I shared the knowledge of the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, had a sighting of the Flying Spaghetti Monster bumper sticker! He was so excited! I hope to see more of these as I drive around, looking for his noodly appendage.

2. What did it say?
I saw one but could not get close enough to read it. I have the medallion on the back of my truck. So far so good, Darwin Fish don't last too long around here but I don't think anyone really knows what to think about his noodliness.

7. Well, it's funny what gets people excited, isn't it.
When I see a fish symbol on the car, it the driver saying "I believe in Christianity."

When I see the flying sp. monster symbol, it's saying "I believe in making a parody of Christianity."

I mean, it's fine as far as it goes. But it's not the most elevated profession of ideals, is it? I wonder about choosing a parody, even if it's just a bumper sticker on a car or a sig line on DU, as THE statement, as part of my general political philosophy that you can't beat something with nothing. I certainly wouldn't get excited about it.

9. I see what you are saying

but I think it is a little more nuanced than that - the whole thing came from an effort to point out the absurdity of teaching intelligent design in public schools. So it isn't simply a parody of Christianity IMO. It's more specific and applicable than that.

edit for spelling

10. I have a bumper sticker that says "Born O.K. the first time"
Now THAT'S a parody of religion.

I agree that the FSM is more than just a parody.

14. That would be a nuanced, comprehensive parody.

Which, as I've said, is fine as far as it goes.

16. And when I see a fish symbol on a car, I see a person saying
"I want everyone to think that I am chrisian".

As the old saying goes, "don't tell me you are a Christian; let me figure it out for myself."

Real Christians don't support war. Real Christians don't vote for criminals.

Real Christians don't put fish symbols on their cars.

19. The reason the parody of Christianity came up
is because of the fundies pushing Intelligent Design in Pennsylvania. A man read the flying spaghetti monster information at the Board Meeting, cracking up many of the attendees.

You can probably find the record at Google.

22. That's not *exactly* what it means.
I think it's specifically a parody of Intelligent Design, not Christianity. And yeah, there are loftier sentiments... but it IS just a bumpersticker. Can't get too deep, there...

8. I have a T-Rex on my car
If you look closely, it is feasting on a jesus fish. I have come to the conclusion that subtlety is lost on those folks, though.
