Christian School Disowns Brokeback Mountain Actress...
'Brokeback' Star Slammed by Former School
http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2006-03-03/

<SNIP>Brokeback Mountain actress Michelle Williams has been disowned by her former school because of her role in the controversial gay cowboy romance. Williams, who attended exclusive Santa Fe Christian School in San Diego, California, has been blasted by the school's headmaster as "offensive" for acting the long-suffering wife of a homosexual ranch hand, played by Heath Ledger. Jim Hopson has branded the Oscar nominee a poor role model, and hopes his education establishment won't be linked to the film's themes. He tells the San Diego Union Tribune, "We don't want to have anything to do with her in relation to that movie. Michelle doesn't represent the values of this institution. Brokeback Mountain basically promotes a lifestyle we don't promote."

Imagine how pissed off they'll be if she wins Best Supporting Actress... :eyes:

1. disowned by her shchool? LOL
I'm sure she'll really lose sleep over being "disowned" by a school she doesn't even attend at this point in time. :D

33. My memory's a little hazy on specifics, so I "wikied" this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanessa_Redgrave

**********

In 1977, Redgrave funded and narrated a documentary film on the plight of the Palestinian people. That same year she starred in the film Julia, about a woman murdered by the Nazi regime in the years prior to World War II for her anti-Fascist activism. Her co-star in the film was Jane Fonda who, in her 2005 autobiography, noted that "there is a quality about Vanessa that makes me feel as if she resides in a netherworld of mystery that eludes the rest of us mortals."

<snip>

Redgrave's performance in Julia garnered an Academy Award for Best Actress. However, belligerent members of the extremist organization, the Jewish Defense League (JDL), chose the awards' ceremony in the spring of 1978 to protest against both Redgrave and her support of the Palestinian cause.

Aware of the JDL's presence outside, Redgrave, in her acceptance speech, denounced all forms of totalitarianism, and noted that she would not be intimidated by "a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums whose behavior is an insult to the stature to Jews all over the world." Her statement was greeted by both applause and boos from the audience.

Later in the broadcast veteran screenwriter and Oscar presenter Paddy Chayefsky told the audience members that “there's a little matter I'd like to tidy up... at least if I expect to live with myself tomorrow morning. I would like to say that I'm sick and tired of people exploiting the Academy Awards for the propagation of their own personal propaganda. I would like to suggest to Miss Redgrave that her winning an Academy Award is not a pivotal moment in history, does not require a proclamation and a simple ‘Thank you' would have sufficed.” He received thunderous applause.

**********

And IIRC, Chayefsky also gave us "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!", so righteous indignation seemed to come fairly naturally to him.

Anyway, I was using the Vanessa Redgrave story as an example of presenters and/or acceptees soapboxing at the podium.

Sometimes you get Tom Hanks talking about AIDS after Philadelphia, sometimes you get Vanessa Redgrave talking about angry protesters, and sometimes you get Paddy Chayefsky, just plain angry.

7. Let's see, she's being disowned for acting the role of a good
Christian woman who has found herself married to a homosexual man who is trying to fight off that horrible defect he sees within himself but is obsessed with another man and unable to do so.

And they blame HER?

Oh, I forgot, it's always the wife's fault, even when she's only a fictional character.

22. These people need to get a grip on reality. They don't mention
that she married her co-star and they now have a little baby. Simple minds just can't seem to grasp the difference between reality and a good story. I didn't think Brokeback Mountain promoted homosexuality, and I do hope she wins the Oscar, then she can say neener neener. You've got my vote, Michelle; you were great.

But this one emphasizes Biblical interpretation of subjects like Science & Social Sciences. It's also about 98% white.

I wonder if Doctor Michael is long for the faculty?

Um....a public tantrum is not a very smart way of keeping his establishment from being linked with the film and the actress.
