Abuse of Power: How the Government Abuses Eminent Domain
Steven Greenhut

Author and journalist Steven Greenhut spoke at the Independent Institute in Oakland, California about his book “Abuse of Power: The Government Misuse of Eminent Domain.” Timothy Sanderfur, an attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation, joins the author in discussing the various ways the government has abused the power of eminent domain in the pursuit of seizure of property from private owners. The panelists’ discussion ranges from the time of American colonization to present day. They also talk about the 2005 Supreme Court case Kelo v. New London in which Mr. Sandefur wrote a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of members in the Kelo party. The discussion is moderated by David Theroux, president and founder of the Independent Institute.

Steven Greenhut is the Senior Editiorial Writer for the Orange County Register. "Abuse of Power" is his first book. Timothy Sandefur is an attorney with the Pacific Legal Foundation.

Book Club: "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren

Robert Penn Warren's novel "All the King's Men" was published in 1946 and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1947. "All the King's Men" tells the story of the rise and fall of Willie Stark, whose character is based on Huey Long, Governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and U.S. Senator from 1932 to 1935. From Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, DC, Swarthmore College political science professor Raymond Hopkins discusses the book in an event hosted by the Swarthmore College/Mt. Holyoke alumni book group.

Raymond Hopkins is a political science professor at Swarthmore College, where he has taught since 1967. His area of specialty is world food supply and food politics. Hopkins was a delegate to the 1996 World Food Summit, and he has authored and/or edited several books, including "The Global Political Economy of Food" and "Food in the Global Arena." Professor Hopkins has held visiting teaching posts at Stanford University, Harvard University, the University of Nairobi, and the International Food Policy Research Institute.

Professor Peck also talks about why he wrote the book and reads a selection from it. The talk was hosted by the Goethe Institute in Washington, DC. Includes Q&A.

Jeffrey Peck is a professor in the Communication, Culture and Technology Program at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and a senior fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (also located in Washington, DC). He is co-author of "Sojourners: The Return of German Jews and the Question of Identity" and co-editor of "Multiculturalism in Transit: A German-American Exchange."

It chronicles the events of the American Revolution that Mr. Nash feels are often glossed over by popular history. He also describes the motivations behind the revolution as being driven not only by the Founding Fathers, but by all classes and races of American society.

Gary Nash is the author of "Red, White, and Black: The Peoples of Early North America," and "First City, History on Trial" among others. He is a professor of history at UCLA.

The Cuban Revolution: Years of Promise
Teo Babun

Teo Babun discusses the photographs of the Cuban Revolution collected by his father. The photographs, published in his new book, cover the uprising against, and the eventual overthrow of, the Batista government in the late 1950s. During the talk, Mr. Babun talks about how his father began working with Fidel Castro and argues that there is a wide gap between the official history of the revolution as described in Cuban history books and the story of what really happened. He says that Fidel Castro went back on his promise to create a democracy after the revolution and it is this betrayal that drives most anti-Castro forces within Cuba and the United States. Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida hosted the talk. Includes slide show and Q&A.

Dust to Eat: Drought and Depression in the 1930s
Michael Cooper

Michael Cooper recounts the Dust Bowl of the 1930s that swept across the Great Plains to California in his book "Dust to Eat." The author describes the struggle to survive the harsh conditions of the migrant camps and the hardships of the children who worked alongside their parents in the fields and often died of disease and malnutrition. This event was hosted by Timber Lane Elementary School in Falls Church, Virginia.

Michael Cooper won the Carter G. Woodson Book Award from the National Council for the Social Studies for his book "Remembering Manzanar." He is the author of several books for young adults on American history, including "Hell Fighters: African American Soldiers in World War I," "Slave Spirituals and the Jubilee Singers," and "Playing America's Game: The Story of Negro League Baseball."

"Is Bill Cosby Right?" is author Michael Eric Dyson's reaction to comments comedian Bill Cosby made about lower-income blacks at an NAACP gala to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education. Mr. Cosby accused poor blacks of being illiterate, irresponsible parents and "not holding up their end of the deal." The book was discussed by the African American Authors Book Discussion Group, hosted by the Ypsilanti District Library in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The book club members dissect both Bill Cosby’s arguments and Michael Eric Dyson's rebuttals.

Michael Eric Dyson is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books, including "The Michael Eric Dyson Reader," "Open Mike," "Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur," "Why I Love Black Women," "I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr.," "Race Rules: Navigating the Color Line," "Making Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X" and "Reflecting Black."

In this illustrated slide talk, Bob Zeller looks at the history of civil war photography through the work of confederate photographer George Cook. Mr. Cook had a studio in Charleston, South Carolina where he worked during the war until early 1864 when he had to flee to Columbia, South Carolina. Bob Zeller also discusses other photographers including Alexander Gardner and Mathew Brady. "The Blue and Gray in Black and White" is a comprehensive study of civil war photography.

Bob Zeller is author of "The Civil War In Depth" volumes one and two. These books contain stereo or 3D images from the Civil War and come with special viewing glasses. He is founder and president of the non-profit organization, the Center for Civil War Photography, Inc. and lives in North Carolina.

Radio host and author G. Gordon Liddy presents strategies for private citizens and larger businesses to protect themselves from criminal behavior, terrorism, and even weapons of mass destruction in his new book, "Fight Back: Tackling Terrorism, Liddy Style." In it, Mr. Liddy provides guidelines on how to most effectively respond to and deal with chemical, biological, and nuclear attacks, kidnapping attempts, and home or business invasion. The author enlisted the help of experts in the fields of military and medicine who contributed to the book. His son James Liddy joins him during the talk.

G. Gordon Liddy served as an Army artillery officer during the Korean War and was a special agent and later a Bureau Supervisor in the FBI. In 1971 he was a staff assistant to the President of the United States. He was later implicated in the Watergate scandal and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but was released by President Jimmy Carter after serving five years. He is the author of "Will" and currently hosts the nationally-syndicated radio program the G. Gordon Liddy Show.

In "Huey" David Hilliard profiles Huey Newton, the founder of the Black Panther Party. The author, who is chief of staff of the party, explains that the party was founded in Oakland, California in 1966 to fight social oppression and encourage blacks to take control of their own lives. David Hilliard is joined by Huey Newton's widow, Fredrika Newton, to discuss his role as a family man and the personal struggles he dealt with during the last days of his life. This event was hosted by Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Oakland.

David Hilliard is chief of staff of the Black Panther Party. He is the author of "This Side of Glory" and the co-editor of "The Huey P. Newton Reader" with Don Weise. Mr. Hilliard is the director of the Huey P. Newton Foundation.

Kwame Appiah is Laurence S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy and the Center for Human Values at Princeton University. Anchee Min chronicles growing up in China during the cultural revolution in her memoir, "Red Azalea." The book, first published in 1994, began as a collection of essays she wrote when she was first learning how to speak English. The author describes her childhood under the rule of Mao Zedong and recounts how her involvement in propoganda films produced by the ruler's wife, Madame Mao, resulted in her denouncement across the country. During her presentation, she is joined by her daughter, Lauryann Jiang, for a dance routine and dramatic performance. This event was hosted by Pomona College in Claremont, California.

Anchee Min is the author of "Becoming Madame Mao," "Wild Ginger" and "Empress Orchid : A Novel." She was born in Shanghai and was sent to a labor camp at the age of seventeen where she was discovered by talent scouts. Ms. Min worked as an actress at the Shanghai Film Studio and came to the United States in 1984.

Mr. Brinkley describes Father McGivney's legacy and attempts to explain why he may be the first American-born parish priest to be declared a saint by the Vatican.

Douglas Brinkley is a Clark professor of history and director of the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Tulane University in Louisiana. He is the author of "The Boys of Pointe du Hoc," and "Tour of Duty" and co-authored "The Mississippi and the Making of a Nation" with Stephen Ambrose.

Mr. Cashill compares Ali’s life with those of other championship boxers of his era.
