WARRENSBURG, Mo. ? Central Missouri State University today announced that Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity is being suspended by the group's national fraternity. This follows a Student Affairs division investigation in response to allegations that a campus student group mocked the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday by bringing to life stereotypes of the black community at a party.
Student Affairs contacted the fraternity's national headquarters after receiving evidence that linked the local chapter to the incident. In accordance with university policy, CMSU may consider additional disciplinary actions against some students involved.
"As a campus, we are committed to providing a healthy multicultural environment for all of our students. We expect the actions of our student groups to be consistent with this goal," said Walt Hicklin, interim vice president for student affairs. "Hopefully, lessons will be learned, and this will be a valuable growing experience for our students." Hicklin praised AKL's national headquarters in Indianapolis for its assistance in the investigation.
