EDICAL DIRECTOR, Disaster Services We are seeking a part-time Medical Director to support the Disaster Services program in disaster medical response, as well as disaster medicine education and planning. You will be available for deployment as part of HSUS Disaster Services in response to domestic natural disasters, evacuations, and emergencies where significant animal welfare concerns in excess of local capacity exist; develop an HSUS veterinary response team and lead team in a disaster; ensure the safety of those working in the disaster shelter during disaster deployment and implement protocols as need for the handling of aggressive or dangerous animals; assist logistics officer with evaluation and delivery of medical supplies and resources; serve as a liaison and provide guidance and protocols to veterinary medical professionals who wish to volunteer their services during a disaster; make recommendations for the stocking and delivery of veterinary medical supplies essential for disaster response and sheltering; develop and maintain contacts with relevant individuals and organizations throughout the country with particular emphasis on veterinary field/disaster medicine; present training; write internal reports and maintain proficiency and currency in emergency, disaster and shelter medicine techniques and applications. Must be able to travel on short notice to assist in the field as necessary during a disaster and lead the emergency veterinary team as needed in the field during disasters. To qualify for this position, you must: be a graduate of an AVMA accredited course of study leading to a DVM or VMD degree; possess a valid veterinary medical license in one of the 50 states; have additional training or experience in shelter, disaster or field medicine; animal handling skills and knowledge of animal protection issues—experience in handling animals under stress; and working knowledge and experience with NIMS/ICS or commitment to take and pass required courses within six months. You must also possess strong organizational skills; strong oral and written communications skills; public speaking skills; proven ability to manage operations in traditional medical environment; ability to work independently, take initiative, and maintain good communication with other HSUS staff.
