The Pentagon has finally agreed to a criminal investigation onto the death of Pat Tillman (AP)

WHEN Pat Tillman was shot dead in Afghanistan two years ago, the US military lauded him as an inspiring patriotic icon — an all-American hero who had laid down his life for his country rather than pursue a lucrative football career.

By yesterday, his death had been transformed into a serious embarrassment for the US Army and a symbol of America’s flickering fortunes in the War on Terror.

The Pentagon has ordered an investigation into whether Corporal Tillman’s death was "homicide", the result of criminal negligence by the American soldiers who killed him.

1. an online acquaintance told us he was fragged

a year ago. He was a hot dogger and his team was afraid he was going to get them all killed. Apparently this is a fairly common rumor in Afghanistan, since I've also heard it from a few other sources, as well. I'm sure the rumor got back to the family and they were able to get the investigation reopened.

If only the DOD hadn't gone through all the "fallen football hero turned military hero" hooplah, there might have been an honest investigation at the outset and all the rumors would have been laid to rest.

I'm keeping an open mind about this one, but I'm expecting any evidence of fragging/murder to be kept very quiet and dealt with out of sight. I just hope it WAS an accident for his family's sake.

2. Watched Pat as a Sun Devil

and he was a very committed person. Committed to making the play or to completing the job. Somehow "hot dogger" does not fit him. His death is will undoubtedly be the topic du jour for our local talk show hosts here in Phoenix on Monday.

I am not disagreeing as I have heard the fragging rumor, too. I hope that for his family it is only a rumor.
