Blair claims Iraq invasion was the will of God

British pols traditionally have the good sense not to mix religion and politics; normally they don't wear their religion ostentatiously in public like their American cousins. ("God save the Queen!" is more a ceremonial slogan than an invocation of divine intervention.) Now, though, Prime Minister Tony Blair, George W. Bush's obedient ally in the Iraq-war fiasco, has found religion - and his countrymen don't like what they're hearing.

In a British TV interview, Blair said of his controversial decision to send troops to Iraq: "If you have faith about these things, then you realize that judgment is made by other people. If you believe in God, it's made by God as well." (Independent)

In making these remarks to talk-show host Michael Parkinson (video clip), which made Blair sound a lot like his "born-again" pal, Bush, the prime minister dangerously crossed a line his former communications guru, Alastair Campbell, had counseled him to avoid. Campbell famously quipped: "We don't do God."

Many Britons seemed to question the prime minister's sudden religious awakening. Alex Salmond, the head of the Scottish National Party, told colleagues that Blair "did not look divinely inspired but 'troubled, confused and with a great deal on his conscience.'" Salmond observed: "God was not the co-author of the war in Iraq - George W. Bush was the co-author."

Briefly, he's a lawyer who moves Silvio Berlusconi's money around, and may get charged in Italy with taking a bribe to lie in court for him. There have been questions whether she knew about it (she signed joint mortgage applications that are involved), and suddenly on Saturday, with no sign it was going to happen, they announced they were separating. Some rumours say they have been advised to by Labour spin doctors, so that she doesn't get dragged down with him; and they'll get back together if he gets off the Italian charges.

Others, however, say she's pissed off at the way he's often used her name and job to get business deals. Given the fuss over Dubai and US ports, I think there's a bit of irony here:

Already the world of international finance is closing down to him. In November the Dubai authorities rejected an application he had made for a licence to practice there. The request was rejected on the grounds he had replied “no” when asked if he had ever been the subject of an official investigation.

“Your answer to this question was not true,” the letter of rejection said. “You have a duty to provide full, true and plain answers . . . as a lawyer you must be aware of this.”

The separation came after it was disclosed in a leaked letter that her husband told regulators in Dubai that he had the "sympathy" of Tony Blair.

Mr Mills said: "You will also know that I am married to a member of the Cabinet of this country ... but I have the support and sympathy of very many people in public life, from the Prime Minister down."

One close friend said of the minister: "She has been very emotional. Things like the Dubai letter clearly put Tessa in an embarrassing position."

So the Dubai authorities turned him down, and when he said "but I'm married to a cabinet minister, and a friend of Tony Blair!", they replied "we don't care, you lied to us".

I can't say that I really disagree with Blair I just don't think he understands what he is saying.

What these "hyprocritics" fail to realize is that if they truly believe what they say then they would have to understand that everything that has ever happened or will ever happen is the will of god. That includes the deaths of all our own citizens on 911 and the deaths of all our good men and women presently occuring in Iraq. If this "long war" were we are embarking upon is god's will then perhaps they should read that good old book a little closer.

I remember a certain reference to Babylon in one chapter.

I also seem to remember a few references to being held accountable for your actions and treating others as you would wish yourself to be treated.
