All of the letters he receives from constituents will eventually end up housed in an archives somewhere in Ohio. When historians look at his files, they will determine that he acted against the will of his constituents--but only if the letters are in the files. Otherwise, it will appear that the legislation to ban abortion had no opponents in your state.

Haley Barbour is my governor. How much worse can it get? Still, I write letters to him, even though I know it may be futile in causing a change of heart for him. But, in the future when historians research Barbour's governorship, they will see that at least SOME Mississippians challenged him.

between 1978 and 1992. In 1986 we had a Constitutional Convention. Delegates were elected, and the purpose of this convention was to re-write portions of the State Constitution because much of the language in it was so old, some of it going back to colonial times. Well, we're also talking about the most Catholic state in the country, and also the same year William Rehnquist became Chief Justice of the SC. Some of these delegates decided that re-writing more than the language of the State Constitution was a good idea, and tried back then to make RI an anti-choice state. It was introduced as a ballot referendum that year (prop 13, I think) and We The People absolutely TROUNCED the measure!

Wade. Which doesn't mean that the legislature might not force it on him but I think that that that bill is actually already "dead (at least for this year)." Writing a letter to the governor just in case might not be such a bad idea, however, especially if it comes up again in future legislatures while he is in office(hopefully only until 2008!).

This will back fire in a historic way (making the change against these moves more solid/permanent) in the long run.

a) Most of the bills/laws are more extreme than the public would want - laying bare the real agenda of the politicized far right. More people who have been "sympathetic", will (as was the case of Schaivo) feel that "this is too far" - and will start listening to local races per where the "line" on the issue is. Many people have been convinced (in the past 30 years) that abortion is, in theory, not good; however many still would want the option in dire circumstances (think anti-abortion figures: Bob Barr and John Fund.)

b) Many moderates (both parties) believed that repubs would fear pushing the potential backlash from the above reaction to such laws, and did not take seriously the threat of Supreme Court judge nominations. More voters will consider this when voting for president and senators. With SO MANY states acting so quickly after the Alito confirmation, the relationship between th realities of these pieces of legislation and a single supreme court nomination is hard to deny.

These laws may actually help abortion clinics survive in the legal states by keeping clinics there busy with women crossing borders from the "dry" states. For instance, clinics will spring up along the eastern border of Texas the way that liquor stores spring up just across county lines. Or, women may head south to the beaches of Florida for a vacation/abortion package if they have the time and money.

Only the poor and young will die in back alleys.
