Houston MLS team changes name
Nearly one month after the embattled franchise chose to withdraw their first choice of name after outcry from some in the Hispanic community, the team unveiled their new name in Houston on Monday: the former San Jose Earthquakes will henceforth be known as the Houston Dynamo.

I am not sure if this was commented but it caught my attention. I am half mexican and I don't necessarily see the offensiveness of this title. It was commemorating the founding of Houston which happen to fall on the same year. I personally don't see why that could be considered offensive and think it might be an example of putting too much energy into something that really is insignificant.

1. This sort of pisses me off
Maybe someone can explain to me why naming the team after the date of the founding of the city is in 'poor taste' to the Latino community? Aren't they Latino-Americans? Don't they live in the city?

Look if you think the name Houston 1836 is a dumb one, that's fine. For someone in Houston to take offense to that...well that's sort of ridiculous. What's wrong with the fact that Houston and Texas seceeded from Mexico? This is something people are honestly still upset about?

Why can't we all just get along?

2. I agree...
There is for some reason a bitterness about this, even for those who are Americans. I guess it's different in my case. My family chose to come here and live here and be Americans. I didn't know Mexico until 4 years ago, as much as I love the country I know that this is my home. The fact that this is offensive confuses me.

3. The problem with this is the ammo it gives to the Right Wing.
"They don't like that Texas fought Mexico for independence, yet they move here and take our jobs" and that crap.

But since Houston has a sizable Hispanic population, and soccer is popular in Mexico, it was a monetary decision, not a cultural sensitivity one.

I thought it was a great name, unique and historic. Now it's just a run-of-the-mill "Dynamo." Boring.

4. I agree
This was a move that interestingly enough is seemingly one based in capitalism. I guess they don't want to piss off the people who will be spending money, so they changed the name. All about the Benjamins. Yet someone will come along and piss and moan and probably blame it somehow on Al Gore.
