Would you save a toddler or 5 blastula - funny RW freakout!
Mike Stark wouldn't say he would rescue the two-year old. "It is a stupid question."

..."there are tens of thousands of blastula dying in fertility clinics".

<snip>
Mike Stark takes it back to the streets and calls wingnut talk show host Andrew Wilkow. He asks the question that Jane put out the other day:

Jane:

I brought up one of my favorite forced birth conundrums the other day, guaranteed to make wingnut "life begins at conception" heads explode. If a fire breaks out in a fertility clinic and you can only save a petri dish with five blastulae or a two-year old child, which do you save?...read on"

Audio-MP3

Of course Wilkow did freak out..."

... "I'm smarter than you" he crows!!!!!

1. I've been using this example for over 10 years.
Should I sue for copywrite infringement?

Seriously, this is the question that makes people have to stop and think about what we mean by "life".

2. It's fun watching them sputter and splutter stuff about
"this is just a stupid hypothetical situation!" because they know exactly what they'd do and why and they don't want to admit it to US!

Sometimes they turn beet red and flecks of foam appear at their lips.

It's really great fun to watch.

3. great question! i've got another one (true story)
i have 7 frozen embryos on ice. but before we could implant them, mrs. unblock managed to get pregnant the old-fashioned way after all!

the frozen embryos are still on ice. let's say we have the first baby, then implant the frozen embryos and get our second child that way.

question: who's the "older" sibling? the one conceived first, or the one born first?

6. i would. all our laws, as well as life expectancy is based on BIRTH date
the dwelling on conception is a classic example of "a little learning is a dangerous thing".

9. well the irs's position is clear!
but yes, the fundies steer clear of that one, because "hey, if i need another deduction, i'll just go create more frozen embryos" just doesn't sound like something they want to encourage....

11. You tell me how "innocent" unborn children are when God himself
will not let those who died before baptism into heaven because they have "origianl sin." According to Catholic teaching, babies born before baptism linger in "limbo" for either a long time or until the guy on the throne changes his mind I guess. I'm Catholic but I don't remember the details of this.

12. I hate to be
nit-picky - but I think you mean "die before baptism" not "born."

But you are correct, that is Catholic teaching.
