South Dakota abortion ban: "A Sign of Hope for Women Across America"
Contact: Brian Burch, Fidelis, 734-358-3433, bburch@fidelis.org

CHELSEA, Mich., Mar. 6 /Christian Wire Service/ -- South Dakota's Governor Mike Rounds officially signed legislation today banning all abortions in the state, except those to save the life of the mother.

Fidelis President Joseph Cella applauded the South Dakota Governor saying, "South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds has joined his state legislature in making South Dakota the most progressive state in the nation when it comes to protecting women. The prayers of millions of women who have suffered from abortion were answered today. It is a sign of hope for women across America."

The South Dakota law, House Bill 1215, was passed by both the state House of Representatives and Senate with overwhelming support from both Democrats and Republicans. The bill makes it a crime in South Dakota to perform an abortion on a pregnant woman, at any stage of pregnancy, except to save the life of the mother. Planned Parenthood is expected to challenge the new law in court at the earliest possible date.

Cella continued, "There is little doubt that Planned Parenthood will do everything possible to block this law and protect their abortion business. The South Dakota legislature understood the likelihood of a court challenge and knows that the law is almost certain to be blocked while it makes its way through the court system. However, the aim of the legislation was to urge the Supreme Court to readdress Roe v. Wade and return the issue to the states. The growing number of states now looking to prohibit abortion is significant."

"The truth about Planned Parenthood and the fraud they have perpetrated against women for years must be addressed by the Supreme Court," Cells said.

Fidelis retained South Dakota attorney Matthew McCaulley as a lobbyist during debate on HB 1215. McCaulley was the sponsor of a similar effort in 2004. Pro-life leaders in South Dakota, including Leslee Unruh of the Alpha Center, spearheaded the state effort to introduce and pass the legislation.

Cella stated: "Fidelis joins pro-life leaders from around the country in celebrating the courage of South Dakota. We understand that the legal defense of this legislation will be difficult, and we are committed to helping the state in every way to insure that this law is upheld."

3. I don't understand why planned parenthood or anybody else
would fight this. if the backwards ass people in south dakota want this, shit let them have it. as long as they don't try to stop people from traveling I don't have a problem with this. from what I've read p.p. only has one office in sd.

THAT is where Roe v Wade will be in danger.

14. but that is why they made the law so stiff. they want P.P., to
challenge the law. I say just ignore it, they should now take out billboards asking where are these young people are suppose to get the needed health care from. ask them what is going to happen to the newly born who's parents can't take care of them.

and while P.P., is asking those questions they should start collecting funds so people can go on tours or vacations in states that allow abortions.

21. Because PP is not in it for the money. They are in it out of principle.
Planned Parenthood's family planning clinics have done more to PREVENT abortions than any other entity in this country.

How's that, you say. By disseminating scientifically accurate information about male and female reproductive systems and how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and space the pregnancies you do want.

They also offer classes for women who want to try the rhythm method.

Prevent an unwanted pregnancy = prevent an abortion.

They also offer services for people who want to have babies but are not getting pregnant.

PP's founder, Margaret Sanger, went to prison for opening family planning clinics and mailing pamphlets. Obscenity laws, you know.

BTW, she was the happy mother of three kids, but her own mother's health was broken by 18 pregnancies.

It's the principle of the thing. Women should have the information to control their own bodies. They should want and be able to care for the babies they have.

Especially women in backward places like South Dakota -- they need access to women's clinics more than ever.

Last week I sent checks to my local PP and to the national office.

23. I understand, I'm not against abortion, or p.p. It's just seems that
the people have to fight this bullshit. the only way people in the good ole usa tend to give a damn is when it affects them. maybe this will end those stupid arguments from people who say that there is no difference between the two parties.

41. So WHO in SD is forcing anyone to have an abortion?
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 01:09 AM by napi21
They have ONE PP clinic! If the people of SD don't want any abortions, they JUST DON'T GET ANY!

PP does a lot more than perform abortions, but then again, the people in SD probably don't want contraceptives or family planning ideas either.

That's fine too! If they don't WANT any of those things, the PP clinic won't have any clients and they'll just close!

They don't NEED a law!!!!!!!!!

(edited for spelling)

7. Now I'm Really Confused. Claiming They Are Protecting The Unborn Is One
thing. Claiming banning abortion with almost no exception brings hope to women is not only exponentially more deluded, but one of the most illogical and blatantly insane things I've ever heard from any side ever within an abortion argument context.

40. But only if they've been brutalized by their attackers...
Someone (the SD gov? head of their state leg?) gave quite the rip- roaring interview last week. When pressed by a journalist about forcing victims of rape to carry their rapist's baby, this man outlined what he thought were acceptable parameters.

To wit:
The girl or woman in question would have to be a virgin (how's he going to check? survey the neighbors?), would have to be beaten within an inch of her life (presumably to show she tried to fight back), and would have to be so mentally and emotionally traumatized by the experience that she was on the brink of suicide (again, how would he tell? get a consult with Dr. Frist?).

To give you some sense of the flavor, he tended to repeat words like "really, really, REALLY" so you could tell he had his doubts as to whether such a woman existed at all, but if she did, maybe he'd find the loophole in the law after praying on it for a few months.

Merciful Goddess, please save us from fanatics.

My sisters in South Dakota have all my pity, not my scorn.

Hekate

10. Who was that GOP legislator who said raped virgins
should qualify for abortions but loose women should be forced to bear the child of the rapist? His occupation was listed as the owner of an antique car museum.

Republicans certainly aren't schooled in neither logic nor critical thinking.

13. This is the most ludicrous nonsense...
Even by GOP standards this is bad.

Wether or not you support abortion it follows that the vast majority of women who have had one chose to do so off their own free will and volition. Making it sound like they're being delivered from something they don't support is absurd.

19. Unless you're a raped virgin
then you don't have to be the brood mare. But the SD legislator may not get that exception passed.

Yeah, pregnant, barefoot, whether by a rapist or not is how the SD people think about women.

31. After you're raped, how
do they tell if you were a virgin? Interesting. Does that mean, for instance, that a widowed, but chaste mother of three, who got pregnant from a rape would be allowed to have an abortion or not?

I'm imagining inquisitions to determine whether a young woman really was or was not a virgin before her rape. Somehow, I've been thinking of witch trials.
