Says US close to dictatorship

Republican Congressman Ron Paul has gone on record with his prediction that the impeachment of George W. Bush is right around the corner but warned that in the meantime the US was slipping perilously close to a dictatorship.

The Congressman expressed his resignation at the passage of the Patriot Act and how it again underscores Bush's unchecked powers

"They had a few token changes which mean nothing and under the present system he (President Bush) just ignores what he doesn't like anyway."

Asked if the US was heading into a dictatorship, Paul responded,

"It's getting close to it, it's called usurpation of power and it's done in many ways with Congress just going along because they're sound asleep and this certainly is an attack on our Constitution and on our freedoms."

The worst example I've seen is a young couple. They are fundamentalist Xtian. They don't make much money. They are just barely scraping by. But BY GOD, George Bush is their man. They have 1,000% faith in this guy. No matter what.

Well, this young couple is from New Orleans. They live in Portland. They have lots of family in N.O. Last year, their town got blown away. Their Man did nothing, except play guitar and cut a birthday cake. I wonder what they think now?

I have recently been very busy and haven't had a chance to check out DU lately. What's up with Chavez, and the threads? Apparently I missed something. I guess you must already know about Ron Paul. I didn't mean to sound condescending if I did. It's just with how divided this country has become, many of us (including me) are not even willing to believe anything that comes from a Republican's mouth. (And rightfully so). But I really believe Ron Paul is one of the good guys. Anyway, if you're too busy, I understand, but if you got a minute, could you catch me up on the Chavez thing? Or give me a link? Thanks.

then I will start listening to him more closely. Yes I like some of his rhetoric - but it is meaningless when he works with the party that pushes and enables the president whom he 'fears'.

9. This is not a big surprise...

Ron Paul has been very vocal about his opposition to the Bush regime for a long time now. He's good friends with Bernie Sanders if that's possible for a Republican. He used to be a Libertarian and is very true to the belief of small government, kind of like a real Republican, if they even exist anymore.

12. Ron Paul was the only reason I didn't vote straight Democratic ticket

He was my congressman when I lived in Hays County, Texas. I wrote him about several issues and always got a real response, and then a follow up when the legislation came up for a vote. Now I'm stuck with Lamar Smith -- I've written him several times about impeachment and his response is always feigned surprise at the very idea.

I'm in Ron Paul's distrcit right now, thanks to redistricting... much better than getting stuck with Tom DeLay, anyway! I may disagree with him on a lot, but he definitely speaks out against the party line when he opposes something, and few Republicans have the guts to do that!

to chance some other repub being elected later? Why would we have any more elections anyway, if shrub has unlimited power to ignore any law he doesn't like?

I say that logic is too clever by half. Impeachment is the proper remedy for violation of the Constitution and for violation of the highest laws of the land. If Democrats and a few honest repubs can't work together to get this guy impeached, there won't really be any more meaningful elections in the future, as far as I can see.

27. This Story Has A Lot Of Spin -- It's Intentionally Misleading

I wanted to lift this story for the World News Trust web site. However, when I read into it, I find that the story does not back up the headline, or the lead.

What Paul said was that IF Democrats take control of Congress in the mid-terms, THEN he expects that Bush WOULD be impeached. That's a pretty big detail to skip over in the headline and lead.

I believe Paul said what he said. But, I think the story is sensational and misleading -- bad journalism, so I'm leaving it alone because I don't want to link to it.
