I read a post by Anonymous Liberal last night as blogging on Glenn Greenwald's blog, that has two extremely important points in it, so read it first. One, that the Patriot Act 1 ... AMENDED FISA, in other words, these are not 2 disjointed ideas but should be viewed synonymously. When Bush says that he is signing the Patriot Act into law and talking about the changes made for new technologies, he is AMENDING FISA.

Second, Bush specifically talks about tapping "rotary phones" versus surveillance under modern forms. "Under the new law, officials may conduct court-ordered surveillance of all modern forms of communication used by terrorists"

I also clipped the audio portion (to go along with Anonymous Liberal's text reference) of Bush's Radio Address the next day Oct 27, 2001 in which he again talks about these matters and assures that civil liberties are being safeguarded.

Bottom line is that, as AL says "Bush didn't take his pledge very seriously.If his administration wasn't already violating FISA at the time he made these remarks, it began to shortly thereafter. So much for enforcing these new statutes to the full." And AL also comments that the media is not "connecting the dots" that the Patriot Act is NOT a different story than the NSA controversy.

At this one point in the speech, Bush suddenly looks guilty as hell, his eyes blink a whole bunch of times and he sort of tucks in his mouth after he talks.

Surveillance of communications is another essential tool to pursue and stop terrorists. The existing law was written in the era of rotary telephones. This new law that I sign today will allow surveillance of all communications used by terrorists, including e-mails, the Internet, and cell phones.

2. All those rat worm fearful dems that support the patriot act

3. But see, that's the thing- this was about FISA, warrants, going through

the courts... because the Patriot Act was an AMENDMENT TO FISA.

either the PATRIOT act allowed Bush to do what needs to be done, or FISA is still intact.

5. It's the hypocrisy-in other words, Bush went out on Oct 26, 2001

and signed the Patriot Act. In his speech he says specifically that this new law is going to give him the ability to do surveillance, unlike the old rotary phone wiretapping, using all modern technology. He also says that he will be safeguarding civil liberties.

What Anonymous Liberal is pointing out is that the Patriot Act 1 was actually in large part about FISA. When Bush says that FISA doesn't do what he wants (ie, so he had to break the law) that is NOT what he said back in 2001 when he signed the Patriot Act to do just what he saying now... except that although he talked about warrants, he lied about the parts about warrants. I believe he's lying because of the second clip I made of this where his eyes are all shifty and he's doing a guilty mouth movement as he talks about surveillance.

Point is he was saying that the Patriot Act, which represented FISA, *did* allow him to do what needed to be done. Any comments he has made that skip around FISA and pretend to say that FISA needs to be amended ignores the FACT that Pat Act 1 *was* an amendment to FISA. Synonymous.

that the FISA story is the PATRIOT ACT story. That's what Anonymous Liberal is saying. And the chain of events on this starts with Bush's signing on Oct 26, 2001 and his comments then.
