I work in IT and have had to take the company's side - "no you can't load your child's games, your tax sw, etc." and "sorry, if you have no business need you can't get to that web site anymore"

More and more companies are cutting costs by clamping down on company networks and pcs...

I was more or less 'venting,' rather than asserting my 'right' to visit the website on their computer. Only my computer has it blocked here, apparently.

Blocks you from going to cnn.com but you can easily get to foxnews.com. One day when I was subbing I was on a prep period and wanted to just kill some time on the internet before the next class and discovered this. A definite WTF? in my opinion.

about not letting other jobs interfere with your work performance. Since it's your website that was blocked, perhaps the employer views that as another job and not something they are willing to compensate you for. Since they haven't blocked DU, that seems a more likely motive than the political angle. Just my initial impression.

unless they told you, "Oh, by the way, we're blocking that website you've been accessing 500 times a day..."

I'm in the IT shop where I work and our firewall has a subscription service that downloads a list of forbidden sites 3 times a day. They have them classified as "time wasters", "porno" and so forth. A site that was blocked last week my become unblocked this week for no reason.

I work with some law enforcement types and there guns and ammo sites were blocked for a while until we figured out how to unblock them manually.

Maybe you should ask someone in IT if they could unblock the site.
