Rumors fly about Harris' faltering Senate campaign after Cheney fails to mention her

The political buzz among several of those at Vice President Dick Cheney's fund-raiser for U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw, R-Fort Lauderdale, was more about how U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris' Senate campaign may be unraveling.

Cheney even provided some fuel when he said he was looking forward to swearing in a Republican replacement for Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson -- but didn't mention Harris by name.

"As vice president I look forward to the opportunity to swear in a new Republican senator to serve next to Mel Martinez in the United States Senate," Cheney said.

Morgan Dobbs, Harris' campaign press secretary, said her boss wasn't dropping out.

"We are continuing to move forward to charge ahead in the campaign," she said.

Dobbs didn't have any reaction to Cheney's failure to mention her boss' name. "I can't really comment on an event I wasn't at," she said.

If Harris doesn't run, the biggest potential candidate is Gov. Jeb Bush.

1. I think this is crap (I don't believe it for a second)

and it reduces politics to a "horse race" where nobody talks about real issues, because everything gets reduced to "Republicans vs Democrats".

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about this getting posted here. I just think it is a bunch of baloney and it's a diversion from the issues.

3. May 12 is filing deadline for federal candidates in FL. A "draft Jeb"

murmur is going around, no doubt about it.... Nothing surprises me any more with these people.


As to your concern that this might be a diversion from the issues:

Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris have been 2 measly little issues left over from 2000 that got us to where we are today. No need to worry about our dedication to the issues. ;)

2. Jeb is out of work in Jan :)

So a Senate run could be in the offering. But Florida has resign to run law so Jeb would have to resign to run. IMHO the Florida Leg is just about ready to open and only runs a couple months. So then would be the time to resign.

4. I doubt he'd rule out an '08 run entirely to do this.

He's said he's not running, but this would pretty much preclude it.

5. I think he is planning to run and this would be a Plus Plus for the

Repugs.

IMHO, Jeb expects a Repug to win the Gov. office in 2006. If he runs and wins the Senate seat, that would allow him to run for Pres and IF he wins, the new Repug Gov could back fill his Senate seat with an Repug.
