This morning I called my Father to discuss the outlawing of abortion in South Dakota. Somehow he had missed it. He's a busy man...my step mother is a Parkinson's sufferer and recently underwent shoulder surgery. I could understand why he missed the current events.
When I told him about the ban, he responded with, "That's not right.".
I immediately reminded him of our conversation in September of '04....a mere 60 days until the election. After months of trying to reason with him, a man who describes himself as a REAL Republican...not "one of those neo-cons", I figured the one issue that could possibly convince him to vote for Kerry, was the right for a woman to have safe, LEGAL abortion. I knew that he had always held that belief.
"Dad, these guys are using the argument that if you vote for Kerry...we will be attacked again. Well Dad, I can't predict the future, but there's a good chance we will be attacked again at some point no matter who is our leader. But one thing I can promise you: If Bush wins, he will appoint at least one anti-choice justice and possibly as many as three, to the Supreme Court. They will outlaw safe abortion in one of the bass-ackwards states, and the process will begin to overturn Roe v Wade in our Union."
His reply: "Oh son, now you're using conjecture. You're trying to read the future. Roe v Wade will never be overturned. This country has come too far to let something like that happen."
Flash forward to this morning. When I told him the news, he was silent for about ten seconds and when he replied you could hear the shock in his voice.
"That's not right.".
Another ten second pause.
"That's horrible.", he finally mustered.
With anger in my voice, I replied, "Dad....I TOLD you this would happen. You wrote me off. You still take me for a young boy without the ability of critical thinking skills. When the hell are you going to learn that I don't tell you this stuff without some serious investigation? When are you going to realize I give you information like this so that you, a terribly busy man, can make better decisions concerning our Republic?"
His reply?
"But son, IF this reaches the Supreme Court (can you see me roll my eyes on the other end of the phone), these new judges won't vote to overturn Roe v Wade.".
When will they realize that we aren't warning them about this stuff just because "we don't like a guy."?
God save our country.
