Let's see the fundie Church Ladies (male and female) don't want to distribute birth control, which will increase the chance of unwanted pregnancies. They want to ban abortion, even though unwanted pregnancies are a natural consequence of no birth control.

Ooooookkkkkay.

So their answer is to promote chastity and abstinance from sexual activity until marriage. (And avoid it within marriage too, unless it's specifically to have children, I guess.)

So now, after making it much harder for people to have sex, they want to ban the only alternative of, er, self gratification, by banning dildos.

Oooooookkkkkay. This makes a lot of sense.

What do these people want anyway? They really want a bunch of frustrated, wild-eyed people with internal energies about to explode at any moment? If you think we hvae an uncivil society now, just wait until the population is filled with people with raging hormones that are denied any chance of release.

Well, at least the water companies will make a lot of money from all those cold showers people will be taking, if the right wing morals police have their way.

The restrictions are not to prevent sex, but to encourage childbirth. After all, we are down to our last 6.5 billion people, so we had all better get busy.

Ever read 'Mass Psychology of Fascism' by Wilhelm Reich? Goes into how fascist regimes often cultivate sexual frustration in the population to use to their advantage.

Well worth reading on this subject, especially since it's one of the few books banned and burned by the US government (and the author thrown in jail to die) after WWII.

30. From Willie's pen:
"The result is conservatism, fear of freedom, in a word, reactionary thinking.
It is not only by means of this process that sexual repression strengthens political reaction and makes the individual in the masses passive and nonpolitical; it creates a secondary force in man's structure-an artificial interest, which actively supports the authoritarian order. When sexuality is prevented from attaining natural gratification, owing to the process of sexual repression, what happens is that it seeks various kinds of substitute gratifications. Thus, for instance, natural aggression is distorted into brutal sadism, which constitutes an essential part of the mass psychological basis of those imperialistic wars that are instigated by a few. To give another instance: From the point of view of mass psychology, the effect of militarism is based essentially on a libidinous mechanism. The sexual effect of a uniform, the erotically provocative effect of rhythmically executed goose-stepping, the exhibitionistic nature of militaristic procedures, have been more practically comprehended by a salesgirl or an average secretary than by our most erudite politicians. On the other hand it is political reaction that consciously exploits these sexual interests. It not only designs flashy uniforms for the men, it puts the recruiting into the hands of attractive women. In conclusion, let us but recall the recruiting posters of war-thirsty powers, which ran something as follows: "Travel to foreign countries-join the Royal Navy!" and the foreign countries were portrayed by exotic women. And why are these posters effective? Because our youth has become sexually starved owing to sexual suppression.
The sexual morality that inhibits the will to freedom, as well as those forces that comply with authoritarian interests, derive their energy from repressed sexuality. Now we have a better comprehension of an essential part of the process of the "repercussion of ideology on the economic basis": sexual inhibition changes the structure of economically suppressed man in such a way that he acts, feels, and thinks contrary to his own material interests. "

This is what they want... then let them have it...

And in our half of the country we will continue to move forward and become a leader in the world of human rights, human decency and peace, we will have National healthcare, we will take care of our country and our people before worrying about other countries economies (India), Education will lead the world in science, technology and medicine. 32. IMO, a lot of people are taking this a bit too literally
In the Bible based communities where these ostensibly all-inclusive bans on sexual activity are promoted they have a traditional understanding that sex (and possibly marriage) with a blood relative or a four footed animal "doesn't count."

They are not fanatics proposing a total prohibition on sexuality--that would be unworkable and irrational. They are simply rising to meet the threat posed by Blue-State sexual permissiveness to the "traditional family structure"--which is usually likened to a tree:

15. I saw this on Andrew Sullivan's blog today -Sexual Repression and Violence

Sexual Repression and Violence

07 Mar 2006 09:34 am

Is there a connection? The murderer of Theo van Gogh was a sexual failure in Holland. Mohammed Atta went to a strip club before 9/11. The sexual repression in much of the Arab-Muslim world means a lot of frustrated young men, eager for some kind of escape. Ian Buruma has a typically fecund essay on the topic here. Money quote:

"Sexual deprivation may be a factor in the current wave of suicidal violence, unleashed by the Palestinian cause as well as revolutionary Islamism. The tantalising prospect of having one's pick of the loveliest virgins in paradise is deliberately dangled in front of young men trained for violent death. And even those who are not trained to kill and die often live in authoritarian societies in which sex before marriage is strictly forbidden, in which women outside the family home are not only supposed to be untouchable, but invisible. Access to MTV, the internet, DVDs and global advertising reinforces the notion that westerners live in a degenerate garden of sinful delights. This makes the lot of millions of young Arab men even harder to bear, and can provoke a mixture of rage and envy."

I cannot believe that a culture in which half of humanity is essentially in slavery to the other half, and in which all sexuality is treated as potentially damning, is a culture at peace with itself or the world.

35. A Letter To Dr. Breen.
Let me read a letter I recently received.:

"Dear Dr. Breen, why has the Combine seen fit to suppress our reproductive cycle? Sincerely, a concerned citizen."

Thank you for writing, concerned. Of course, your question touches on one of the basic biological impulses, with all of its associated hopes and fears for the future of the species. I also detect some unspoken questions. Do Our Benefactors really know what's best for us? What gives them the right to make this kind of decision for mankind? Will they ever deactivate the suppression field and let us breed again? Allow me to address the anxieties underlying your concerns, rather than try to answer every possible question you might have left unvoiced. First, let us consider the fact that for the first time ever, as a species, immortality is within our reach. This simple fact has far reaching implications; it requires radical rethinking and revision of our genetic imperatives. It also requires planning and forethought that run in direct opposition to our neural presets. I find it helpful at times like these to remind myself that our true enemy is instinct. Instinct was our mother when we were an infant species. Instinct coddled us and kept us safe in those hardscrabble years when we hardened our sticks and cooked our first meals above a meager fire, and started at the shadows that leapt upon the cavern's walls. But inseparable from instinct, is its dark twin, superstition. Instinct is inextricably bound to unreasoning impulses, and today we clearly see its true nature. Instinct has just become aware of its irrelevance, and like a cornered beast, it will not go down without a bloody fight. Instinct would inflict a fatal injury on our species. Instinct creates its own oppressors, and bids us rise up against them. Instinct tells us that the unknown is a threat, rather than an opportunity. Instinct slyly and covertly compels us away from change and progress. Instinct, therefore, must be expunged. It must be fought tooth and nail, beginning with the basest of human urges: the urge to reproduce. We should thank Our Benefactors for giving us respite from this overpowering force. They have thrown a switch and exercised our demons in a single stroke. They have given us the strength we never could have summoned to overcome this compulsion. They have given us purpose. They have turned our eyes toward the stars. Let me assure you that the suppressing field will be shut off on the day that we have mastered ourselves, the day we can prove we no longer need it. And that day of transformation, I have it on good authority, is close at hand.

Link:

(snip)
1) There is no conclusive scientific evidence to support the claim that exposure to any form of music will cause the listener to commit a crime or damn his soul to hell.

(2) Masturbation is not illegal. If it is not illegal to do it, why should it be illegal to sing about it?

(3) No medical evidence of hairy palms, warts, or blindness has been linked to masturbation or vaginal arousal, nor has it been proven that hearing references to either topic automatically turns the listener into a social liability.

(4) Enforcement of anti-masturbatory legislation could prove costly and time consuming.

(5) There is not enough prison space to hold all the children who do it.

>They really want a bunch of frustrated, wild-eyed people with internal energies about to explode at any moment?<

They're doing it just as much as the "sinners" are. They just think we don't know about it.

As most here know, I attended a fundie church for fifteen years before I finally realized I didn't believe a thing I was being told, and I left. Every scandal that enveloped my former church came as a result of extra marital sex, and let me tell you, there were some doozies. I was amazed at the things I found out about the "pillars" of my church. I still am. They are so desperately afraid that SOMEONE is openly having fun without shame or repression. They must put a stop to it. The best way to call them out is to face them with their own iniquity.

60. The unintended consequence is that prostitution SOARS.
All it takes is a degree in history to see that. :sarcasm:

Look at the late Victorian era, when women were expected to be chaste, even in marriage, and masturbation was seriously denounced by everyone from doctors to preachers. This was also the era in which prostitution was at its height, and in which sexually transmitted diseases flourished as a consequence. Looking at court records, death certificates, and other documentation, historical demographers estimate that women who made their living primarily as prostitutes made up 1% of the population, and women who supplemented their income with occasional prostitution were as much as an additional 5%. (High Victorian Culture, Morse) This trend was not unique to the Victorians; it was happening in much of the rest of the world and had happened for centuries (the Victorians are just the first time we have really good records). It wasn't until the early 60s that both STDs and prostitution came under some control.

And until the advent of antibiotics, STDs killed and/or destroyed fertility in a high percentage of the population. (This has had to be interpreted from skeletal evidence, since death certificates and family records of death rarely mentioned syphilis as a cause of death.)

Men would visit prostitutes rather than risk having another pregnancy; arrests for prostitution fell per capita after the advent of effective oral contraceptives and abortion.

But do these things ever cross the minds of these nasty-minded, censorious idiots? Of course not.

Makes you wonder if they're anorgasmic or just impotent.
