Freepers dissing my election!
I've noticed a huge number of visits on my web page from Freepers and I thought I would find out why.

Much to my chagrin, they've been dissing me behind my back!!! I'm shocked! They say I don't have a chance to win my election in Hastert's District. Maybe... Maybe not. Below is a snippet of their BS I found.

Help me to show them they are wrong!

Are you sure you wouldn't want to move to the 50th district just to vote for me?

Thanks for your donation! Every little bit goes toward buying a sign or and ad and moves us a little closer to democracy.

Thanks - really,

7. sorry... I didn't answer your question.
I was so excited that someone wanted to donate to my campaign!

I am PRO CHOICE and PRO PRIVACY! Without an opportunity to have privacy any person who is considering an abortion, having an abortion or has had an abortion could be put in grave danger.

Parents of minors should not be notified in my opinion, if I was elected as State Rep. I would vote Pro Privacy.

6. I am SHOCKED that Freepers would do this
to a good American.

Listen and listen good - I am an ex-republican who used to listen to Hannity and LImbaugh - there is one objective and that objective is winning - no one cares if you lie or cheat to win. All that matters is WINNING. That is why I, and people like my good republican father can no longer listen to these nutjobs.

We, on the other hand, have morals. So push as far as you can morally, kicking them in the teeth with their own immorality, and WIN!!!

Good luck!

For what its worth, I don't live in Il, but I am interested.

I hear its not so popular downstate as it is in Chicago.

12. Well - I believe in the 2nd amendment
although I don't own any guns or have ever fired a gun. I'm not sure why anyone would need to own an assault rifle and I personally believe in the 2nd amendment.

My constituency, I believe, is for the ban. If I was elected I would vote for the ban, but only because that is how the people of this area want me to vote.

19. Short answer -- mixed feelings.

I'm GA democrat and as such party politics are different here than in IL. You are right to listen to your constituency and your conscience on this matter and hopefully they one in the same.

I was looking for the IL AWB bill now under consideration so that I could be more accurate in my comments but I can't find it online. Perhaps you could post a link.

I have mixed feelings because most homes don't have guns, but there are a sizable number of people who wish to have good firearms for self-defense and the so called assault weapons are mostly desired for that reason. Yes, sometimes bad guys want them for criminal activities, but I believe that are not nearly as common in firearm crime as, say, small handguns.

As a gun owner I am always unhappy to hear about anyone saying I can't own semi-automatic rifles and carbines because it seems like an obvious denial of my liberty. I have some so-called assault weapons that were federally banned prior to the AWB sunset and they aren't really that different from many non-banned firearms. Assault weapons are not machine guns for example.

I'd really like to chat more about this, but I have to leave for class. I'm a profesor.

If you feel brave you may want to start a thread in the GUNS topics forum here at DU about what democrats think of the IL AWB. You will get some people posting the extreme views, but you'll get very good information there too.

20. I could always vote my concience...
I have given this very issue great though but have not come up with a definitive answer. I absolutely believe that every human being on the face of the earth has a right to defend themselves with whatever means possible. I really have no problem with Automatic Weapons, I don't even have a problem with people owning the 50cal sniper rifles or even machine guns. I would wager that 19 times out of 20 those weapons are used for pure sport and entertainment and I have NO problem with that.

I do believe that all of the weapons I mentioned should be licensed, with trigger locks and kept in vaults and protected from children or unwanted users.

This is a wedge issue that I really thing the Democratic party needs to revisit. Over the last 20 years we have made it harder to obtain some weapons and have made them somewhat safer and there are still shootings everyday. A ban on automatic weapons will do NOTHING to stop crimes where those weapons are used.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

I would love to continue this discussion if you don't mind.

Joe Serra

21. Here it is HB 2414
I'm glad to hear that you would vote your conscience because this proposed law would probably violate it.

HB 2414 http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocTypeID=HB&DocNum=2414&GAID=8&SessionID=50&LegID=17433
Synopsis As Introduced
Amends the Criminal Code of 1961. Prohibits the knowing manufacture, delivery, and possession of semiautomatic assault weapons, assault weapon attachments, 50 caliber rifles, and 50 caliber cartridges. Provides for an affirmative defense to a violation for peace officers, correctional institution employees and officers, members of the Armed Services and Reserve Forces of the United States, and the Illinois National Guard while these persons are in the performance of their duties. Establishes penalties for violations. Prohibits the knowing manufacture, delivery, and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device (a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition and any combination of parts from which such a device can be assembled). Establishes penalties for violations. Requires a person who possesses a large capacity ammunition feeding device on the effective date of the amendatory Act, within 90 days after that date, to destroy the device, render the device permanently inoperable, relinquish the device to a law enforcement agency, or remove the device from the State. Establishes as an affirmative defense to a violation, the delivery or possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device while in the performance of their official duties by peace officers, correctional institutional employees and officials, and members of the Armed Services or Reserve Forces of the United States or the Illinois National Guard.

It make it impossible for illinois residents to acquire these weapons.
Illinios residents would have to remove, destroy, or turn in their newly banned weapons (no grandfathering).
It forces the gun manufacturers (Sprinfield Amory, Armalite, and others) in your state to close down or move.

If you were running in my district I would urge you to speak out against this law. You are correct that guns are a divisive issue for our party and I wish our party leaders would take a reasonably stance such as yours (i.e., that law abiding citizens should be able to own whatever firearm they chose, but must meet certain "responsibilities" -- if I may paraphrase).

23. Joe, automatic weapons have been controlled since 1934...
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 10:25 PM by benEzra
The Title 2/Class III provisions of the National Firearms Act of 1934 place VERY strict controls on all automatic weapons. To own one, a civilian must pass what amounts to a Secret-level government security clearance (six to eight month background check, including interviews with your neighbors, your local chief law enforcement officer has to sign off on your application), if approved you receive a special form from the Federal government and are then allowed to purchase an automatic weapon from a specially licensed NFA Class III dealer. And only the relatively wealthy need apply, since a civilian transferable Title 2 AK-47 runs around $15,000, an M16 runs from $15,000 to $75,000, and many collectible machineguns are well into the six-figure range.

The "assault weapon" bait-and-switch, on the other hand, is an attempt to ban civilian NON-automatic guns that have modern styling features, such as rifles and shotguns with ergonomic handgrips, as well as nearly all civilian firearms holding 11 or more rounds of ammunition.

My wife and I own several guns that fall under the gun prohibitionist lobby's working definition of "assault weapon"; these include my Ruger mini-14 Ranch Rifle and my wife's 15-round 9mm Glock pistol. I also own a civilian AK-47 lookalike (civilian rifle that functions like a low-powered hunting rifle but looks like a real NFA Title 2 restricted AKM).

Long guns of ANY type are rarely used in crimes, since they cannot be readily concealed on the person. Of the relatively few homicides involving long guns, the most commonly used gun (taking BATFE trace data as a rough proxy) is the ordinary 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. IIRC, rifles account for less than 8 percent of homicides, and the most common rifle used in homicide is the ubiquitous .22 caliber squirrel rifle, not any sort of "assault weapon."

Some perspective on why some Dems keep shooting themselves in the foot on the gun issue:

Dems and the Gun Issue--Now What?

Some background on the "assault weapon" bait-and-switch:

What the "Assault Weapons Ban" Did, and Didn't, Do (referring to the now-expired Feinstein ban; the Illinois bill is worse).

25. I just think it's short sighted
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 01:44 AM by gunsaximbo
Yes, guns can be very dangerous in the wrong hands. Most licensed owners of weapons, I assume, are law abiding citizens and don't go around robbing, raping & pillaging with their firearms. They are used for hunting and for hobby. We democrats have to understand that better.

I do think there should be licensing. I do think there should be a background check. I do think firearms should be stored safely.
I do think we should all be able to own any kind of gun we want.

Hopefully I can help to change some views once I'm elected.

26. Russ Feingold is a good model

Russ's position on guns is one of the best in the party. If more democrats took this position, then we would win more elections.

Excerpt from a recent statement (http://feingold.senate.gov/~feingold/speeches/04/03/2004310624.html)
I have never accepted the proposition that the gun debate is a black and white issue, a matter of ``you're with us, or you're against us.'' Instead, I have followed what I believe is a moderate course, faithful to the Constitution and to the realities of modern society. I believe that the Second Amendment was not an afterthought, that it has meaning today and must be respected. I support the right to bear arms for lawful purposes--for hunting and sport and for self-protection. Millions of Americans own firearms legally and we should not take action that tells them that they are second-class citizens or that their constitutional rights are under attack. At the same time, there are actions we can and should take to protect public safety that do not infringe on constitutional rights.

I supported the Brady bill requiring background checks of gun purchasers. I have voted in favor of closing the gun show loophole that unacceptably increases the danger that a gun will fall into the hands of a criminal. And I support child safety locks and other measures to make firearms less dangerous to gun owners and their families. These are reasonable measures that do not infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens to own and use guns.

On the other hand, I have long opposed banning handguns, requiring national gun registration, and restricting the rights of young adults to own guns even if they are well trained and operating under adult supervision. I believe that prohibiting certain types of weapons is problematic as well. Although I voted for the ban on certain kinds of semi-automatic weapons in 1994, I have come to believe that it is a largely arbitrary and symbolic measure. Citizens see it as a first step towards confiscating their firearms. I will, therefore, vote against its reauthorization.

Amendment II Democrats (http://www.a2dems.net) is polling Congressional candidates on their views on gun rights and gun legislation; you'll probably get a questionnaire soon if you haven't received one already.

16. Greetings From The 8th District
There's a lot of Democratic votes on in Elgin and Aurora...it'd sure be a real pleasure to kick Fatass Gymteach back to Yorkville.

Let the asshats take their shots...they're in the process of becoming an extinct species here in Illinois.

Good luck with your candidacy...we grabbed the 8th in '04, we've got our eyes on the 6th this year...but grabbing Hastert's district would be the ultimate delight. Let's do it!!

Cheers...
