Before I left the house this morning I caught a few minutes of local news (Nashville, Tn). A trial begins today of a young man who was caught growing marijuana in his basement.
How he was caught, Nashville Electric Service flagged his bill because it was three times the average bill for his area and turned it over to DEA. Scary stuff.

High Times magazine would advise indoor growers to invest in their own generators, because exceptionally high electric bills would trigger DEA interest. But whether DEA requested records of abnormally high usage, or the utility volunteered them back then, I don't know which. They bill you for the usage and then they narc you with it? Cold.

5. In a broader sense, I guess...

I was thinking of people who pay off their credit card debt and get flagged by a bank and have their financial records turned over to Homeland Security, unwarranted wire tapping, your library records monitored, ending up on the no fly list for some idiotic reason etc. etc. It's all very disturbing.
I have a friend who is moving that has a new washer and dryer and some really nice living room furniture for sale. They want cash naturally and I can't believe that I feel uncomfortable about writing a check to cash at the bank. It's just gotten really weird.
