Why would a petite, privileged white Southerner risk everything to fight racism and economic injustice in 1950s America?

How did it feel to be branded a traitor by government officials and shunned by her philosophical allies as a dangerous radical?

History has so thoroughly vindicated Anne Braden's views on racial segregation that it's easy to forget how alone and ostracized her civil rights activism left her at times.

There is much to admire about Mrs. Braden, 81, who died Monday in Louisville. But foremost is her courage.
