What can we do to stop this insane war with Iran?

The stories about Iran - about their 'non-compliance'- about how they will face severe consequences for not complying (with US demands on halting nuclear technology development)...

Our maniac, insane 'leaders' are on the verge of launching a war that will dwarf Iraq in size and repurcussions (not to minimize Iraq by any means, but this has the capacity to start WWIII).

What should we be doing to stop this?

I feel very helpless. I feel that these people would be crazy enough to drop a nuke on Iran. Are we on the edge of going down this road?

3. PNAC?:
At any rate I have to say I don't agree with this assessment. Frankly I don't think war with Iran is very likely (although definately something worth paying attention to). If the Republicans do good in the elections (enough that Bush can claim a victory for his idea), and if Europe pushes for some sort of solution (which is possible), it could occur.

Just judging from the pattern of their activity.
you're free to disagree with me, but we'll see, unfortunately, that I'm right.

25. I'll bet you $500 dollars.
No invasion by the end of April. No let it stretch out to May 8.

I guess though we would have to define exactly waht you you mean by attack - Sanctions could be seen as a form of economic attack for example.

30. sigh....you've proven my point.
thousands of deaths of innocent people does not equate to winning or losing 500 bucks to a stranger on a bulletin board.

if its possible, you've just made a strategic blunder like attacking Iran more petty.

 not sure what you think you've accomplished. Good luck with the internet betting thing to fool yourself into believing you've won an argument. Hope that works out for ya. I got better things to do with my time.

40. Well I just wanted to confirm your holier than thou attitude
I would imagine it's pleasent to imagine one is morally superior to others - you'll have to tell me what that feels like.

At any rate the bet was just a way of underlining my assurity that we won't invade iran in the next two months, as you well know. But it suited you to get on your high horse. So all I can say is, enjoy the view.

14. Did you happen to catch Scott Ritter on the Tavis Smiley show
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 03:02 PM by Emit
earlier this week? Here's the video. This is interesting, particularly in light of your comment about how this has been planned for some time. He discusses his new book, Iraq Confidential-- calls US efforts for Iraq disarmament a trojan horse, and says that we really, instead, have had a policy of regime change to get rid of Saddam, even through the Clinton era. He calls his book the Rosetta Stone that explains all these: Intelligence Conspiracy, Undermining UN, Longterm goal of overthrowing Saddam, etc.

You might have to scroll down to find the archived video with Ritter.

I think people outside DU need to wake up to the fact that this is all a planned progression, not a reaction to a situation. They are fitting the intelligence and rhetoric to a plan of action already committed to.

10. I saw John Murtha (hardball yesterday) say the same exact thing.
He said it was foolish to go around threatening Iran when the American people want to get the hell out of Iraq. He also said we have no money and are totally overstretched now.

In other words, this is bull shit.

I for one though don't think this would keep the crazies from doing crazy ass things.

35.  Don't be so sure it can't be started
I saw Wes Clark asked to comment on that. He said military plans being drawn up would rely on the Air Force with maybe some special forces, and that the Air Force is the only branch of our military which is not yet over extended, so they have the resources such plans would require. The assessment is that Iran's nuclear program can be set back by at least several years through such attacks. Mind you Clark wasn't advocating this, just explaining what "the military option" would likely look like, and that Bush had one available. Further Clark noted that Iran might be able to rebuild it's nuclear program a lot sooner than anticipated if they got some outside help, but more basic to that, the United States as a result would be left dealing with an enraged Iran far into the future, with many Iranians bent on taking revenge against the United States in any way they could.

Clark has been speaking out strongly at every opportunity urging the United States to talk with the Iranians. He argues that we should not be moving quickly down the path of imposing strong sanctions on Iran without showing any willingness to have a direct dialog with Iran, our attitude toward Iran if anything is hardening their resolve to develop nukes, and we damn well shouldn't start shooting at them before we even try talking with them. Clark thinks there is still time for talks to possibly do some good, but they need to start NOW. I think he thinks Bush and/or Israel will attack Iran's nuclear facilities, though he doesn't quite say so explicitly.

I have a thread up in the GD-P forum; Why Won't More Democrats Back Direct Talks With Iran? I don't mention Clark there once because I didn't want to divert the discussion into arguing over possible 2008 Presidential candidates. I only raise Clark here now because you and others are doubting that Bush has the ability to attack Iran and based on what Clark said, I am sure Bush thinks he has the ability to attack Iran, so don't count on Bush thinking otherwise.

Well, the biggest anti war protests in the history of the earth (including the dinosaur era) didn't stop Iraq War II back in 2003, so we need to get more creative and aggressive this time.

Can we kidnap Main Stream Media for a few months without going to jail very long? That could do it.

12. Do nothing
Because all the protesting, marching, and peaceful gatherings isn't going to mean spit to either this
administration or the majority of the U.S. Congress. Yes, some members of Congress will stand up and vote against the next AUMF, but the rest will fall in line with all the "patriotic" bs that will be playing in every media outlet, besides they want to be re-elected because that's what really matters to them.

Let's all just sit and watch as the troops get sent over to fight a never ending war, and our freedoms are whittled away even more. Some here will tell you we need to march, and protest, or make our voices heard through the use of the ballot box.

Guess what? We've already tried that, it didn't work and it won't work this time either.

Sit back and watch the body count go up, up, up, and away.

And if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a cynic!!!!!

27. Sustained Mass Protests All Over America
Colleges, Town Halls, Town Squares, D.C., Wall Street etc.

Lives in the balance.

A big rotation of troops in Iraq is coming up. Once the rotation is complete newbies get to abandon Iraq and turn on Iran?

USS Ronald Reagan, a nuclear powered carrier, which looks more like a floating military base, poised in the Persian Gulf, seemingly just waiting...does this mean they are building up to something, perhaps waiting for orders to attack Iran, and probably Syria at the same time? Iran will be starting it's oil bourse the 21st of this month, selling it's oil for euros, and I think Syria has already ditched the dollar and they are now using the euro exclusively.

In addition to the deployment of the USS Ronald Reagan mentioned above, the US has recently begun moving AC-130 Gunships into "unspecified" airfields in Iraq.

41. THE ONLY WAY to end this war and all of Bush's screw ups is.......
.....to get away from our computers and take to the streets in mass. There would have to be mass marches day after day, week after week, much like they did in the 60's. Washington DC can't very well ignore thousands of people marching with signs in every city across this country. Yes, there would be arrests, there were in the 60's, but the job got done.
