Walmart Abortions? 'Morning After Pill' To Be Sold After All, Suddenly...
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 07:35 PM by the dogfish
Funny timing, what with the rightards scheming to overthrow Roe v. Wade and cashing in on Alito's 'debt of gratitude' to James Dobson.

I hadn't thought Roe v. Wade would be overturned with this country being run by straight males - it would just continue to be a political football for the religious right.

But now I'm not so sure.

If research into drugs like the 'morning after' pill is pursued, they can have it both ways; the political advantage of scoring a victory for the fundie base, and the financial advantage of scoring a big one for pharmaceutical companies who will provide the 'morning after' pill and others like it to provide abortions via pills, without calling them abortions.

So they can look like they're taking the moral high road by outlawing actual surgical abortions, while creating a great big market (and huge financial gain for themselves I'm sure) for pharmaceutical companies' "emergency contraceptives".

What more could a greedy bunch of rich slimebag straight male right-wingers want?

1. Straight males?
I thought the slimebags (slimebag: a slang term for a condom) were "religious" conservatives intent on controlling and eliminating sex.

Someone is going to have to explain to me how and why this isn't gratuitously sexist.

4. Agreed.
I don't like being lumped in with that bunch, OK?

And to the OP: this is not today's news...Walmart announced it earlier last week.

15. I know it's not today's news. That's why it's posted here.

As opposed to "Breaking News".

I don't think I'm being sexist at all. Re-read my post.

What I said was that I didn't think that the straight males running the country would actually want to do away with abortion. Just make it look like they do. For political reasons.

It was a swipe at conservatives, who are currently in charge.

Relax.

2. Morning After is nothing more than High Dose Birth Control Pills
which the pharmaceuticals decided to market that way to make money. This is nothing new. I took high dose BC pills decades ago. What did we do when we missed a pill or two. DOUBLE THEM UP.

They are targeting ALL chemical BC devices. It would not surprise me that barrier methods will be next.

They hate ANY sex that doesn't result in procreation. Just look at their attitude toward gays? Well, it applies to non procreation straight sex too; unmarried or married doesn't matter.

3. Well, they are not abortions
Since Plan B prevents implantation, and implantation is the beginning of a pregnancy, Plan B is not an abortion.

Also, Plan B does not work if a woman is already pregnant.

7. They define pregnancy from FERTILIZATION
not implantation. They go against science. But that is surprising? After all the BIBLE, is now our science textbook.

So, anything that prevents a fertilized egg from implanting is ABORTION to them. Since god kills off approximately 40-60% of all fertilized eggs, I guess he is the biggest abortionist in the world.

11. I know that but you'd be surprised how many people I talk to
who DON'T know that the medical definition is implantation, really start to think about it after it is explained. Ordinary people, not fundie crazies, are having the wool pulled over their eyes on this "Plan B causes an abortion" stuff. So it is worthwhile saying over and over again to the masses out there that

a)Pregnancy begins at implantation. Plan B prevents implantation.

b)Plan B does not work if a woman is already pregnant.

In a way, tho, I must say that all this publicity is giving a lot of attention to Plan B, which it didn't have before. Many women just don't know it exists or they confuse it with RU486.

If we could just get Plan B into every woman's medicine cabinet we could reduce abortions by 50%, according to reproductive health experts. The drug has been approved by the FDA, just not over the counter.

12. Most "anti-abortionists" simply haven't thought it through.
It's amazing how many people I've been able to soften up one-on-one over the years, when I ask simple, respectful questions about what consitutes a human being.

A lot of people--by no means all, but many--understand that a hardline stance that defines ANY fertilized egg as an American citizen with Constitutional rights would mean wholesale changes in the way we all behave.

I suggest we should have a two pronged approach to this.

1) the aforementioned respectful discussions, not of "where life begins," but rather when citizenship begins--you'll find very few who think of a fertilized egg as a citizen; and

2) A realistic discussion of what kind of penalties the "anti-abortionists" could support for having an abortion. I don't think most pro-lifers really, in their heart of hearts, want to see women put in jail. And I know that most Americans don't.

We can win this. Really.

9. Well ...
I think the OP's heart was in the right place even if the bile factor was just a tad too high.

Reflux, maybe?

I look at this as Good News -- but when the tide starts to turn, there's always a lot of turbulence.

8. Please don't confuse the issue
Morning after pills are not abortions, please don't help them spread the meme that it is. They actually prevent abortions and are a good thing for women.

10. The moral high road aint the point
This reversal combined with their rah-rah cheerleading session for women on what a great company they are for the female half of the human race combined with their recent reversal on some of the more outrageously sexist company policies lead me to believe their sales figures are a lot more dismal than they have let on.

They need us a hell of a lot more than we need them.

14. I guess some people in here didn't get the message
Let's try this again:
Please stop using the abortion issue as a way to slam straight men. The numbers and facts simply do not support your comments. There are just as many women out there who do not support YOUR right to choice. And from recent posts there are plenty of straight men who support your right to your body and the right to make family planning.

Thank you in advance.

17. Try reading the post. It was about the people running the country.
Who are, for the most part, straight men, currently.

It was about those in charge.

I agree with you, there are just as many women "out there" who do not support a woman's right to choose. But this post wasn't about who's "out there" it was about who's in charge.

Furthermore, in the post I wrote, I was actually saying that they (the straight men currently in charge) probably don't want to actually eliminate abortion.

I might be right, I might be completely wrong, but please don't attack a position that I didn't even take to begin with.

So I'll thank you in advance for that. Deal?

I didn't object to the content at all, it is the language to describe men I find offensive.

16. I'm amazed at how many of you completely missed my point.
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 09:11 AM by the dogfish
The point was about the conservatives pretending to want to eliminate abortion to cater to their base, while maybe not really wanting to eliminate it - and the profits that could be made with the 'morning after' pill.

This post was about conservatives being frauds, and greedy.

So, no, I wasn't being sexist.

No, I'm not 'upset' about the morning after pill being legal.

Yes, I'm upset about Alito on the bench and his apparent agenda.

And for the record, I'm completely pro-choice.

I don't hate straight men. I was talking about the ones currently running the country. I thought that was obvious.

Please. Re-read the post. Relax.

I'm really very surprised at those replies here that seem to be knee-jerk responses to one or two words they've picked out of the post and taken out of context.

As far as discussions about whether or not the pill actually would be considered an 'abortion'; I hadn't thought about that part of it, good point.

You might agree or disagree with me for a variety of reasons, fine. But at least disagree with what was actually said instead of a position I didn't even take.
