*** Need 20,000 LTTEs demanding the Republican Congress do its job ***
Email from Sen ator Harry Reid...

The slide into irrelevance

It was no surprise to me that the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee has once again caved to George Bush and refused to open an investigation into President Bush's domestic spying program. One is left to wonder what it would take to make this Republican Congress stop rubberstamping the Bush Administration and actually do real oversight.

Last week 30,000 of you joined me asking for an Independent Katrina Commission. We need to expand our call beyond Katrina and demand that the Bush Republicans in Congress do their job, stop looking the other way and conduct oversight of this administration.

We need to take our message directly to the American people. This week, help me send 20,000 letters to the editor demanding the Republican Congress do its job and conduct oversight of the Bush Administration.

Send a letter to the editor by visiting:

http://giveemhellharry.com/page/speakout/NSA

We cannot effectively legislate on the NSA spying issue if we do not know the facts, and we will not know them if the Republican-controlled Intelligence Committee persists in refusing to do its job. My colleague, Ranking Member on the Intelligence Committee, Senator Jay Rockefeller, said it best:

"For the past three years, the Senate intelligence committee has avoided carrying out its oversight of our nation's intelligence programs whenever the White House becomes uncomfortable with the questions being asked.

"The very independence of this committee is called into question as we are continually prevented from having a full accounting of pre-war intelligence on Iraq, the CIA's detention, interrogation, and rendition program, and, now, the NSA's warrantless surveillance and eavesdropping program.

"If we are prevented from fully understanding and evaluating the NSA program, our committee will continue its slide into irrelevance."

We need to act if Congress is ever going to hold the Bush Administration accountable.

Thank you,

Harry Reid

3. I just wrote a LTTE-not really about NSA,more about Republicans
On the event of the 2300 death of a U.S. serviceman in Iraq,I'd like to reflect on National security. Are we more secure since 9/11,the reason these boys, and my son, went to Iraq(under faulty intelligence)? We have established that our ports are run almost entirely by foreign entities,a fact that our Republican leadership,in the form of CFIUS,doesn't have a problem with,as long as they get their cut(John Snow and the Carlyle Group are set to make out nicely from this deal). Our borders are not secure, and the Republican leadership has done nothing to decrease the huge influx of illegal aliens into our country-their industrial constituents need this cheap labor to work, displacing American workers. The Republican leadership has sent several million jobs overseas, including many banking and credit card customer service jobs, leaving our financial infrastructure wide open. The Republican leadership has leaked classified information to "get even",in reference to valarie Plame. The Republican leadership has allowed our soldiers, active duty and reservists,to serve multple deployments to Iraq, leaving them physically and mentally broken down, while refusing to send their own children into this futile civil war.Now-convince me that the Republican leadership has our nation's best interest at heart, and not their own financial interests.

Bear in mind,my district voted 65% for Bush in 2004.

16. first draft
Back in the 90's the Republican led congress investigated every move Clinton made. They impeached him over a private, civil matter, but now that their man is in charge they are silent. Bush came out and admitted he has broken the law against warrant-less wire taps and vowed to continue breaking the law. He lied us into a war that has killed tens of thousands of people, drained our treasury, divided our nation, waged class warfare against the poor and middle class, and turned much of the world against us.

Where is our congress? Why aren't they standing up to this man who has said that a "dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier" then went about grabbing more and more power away from congress and the courts? Aren't his actions more damaging to our nation than lying about sex?

Is congress afraid of him, or are they in agreement that a dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier?

(this last line will probably be deleted or changed)
We must demand our representatives make a choice between King George or our constitution. They are either with us or against us.

17. Here's my letter:
Feel free to borrow "liberally" from this letter, but please don't send it to any Georgia papers. I sent it to them already.

The rights of all Americans are in jeopardy. If the President has broken the law and violated our Constitutional rights, he must be held accountable. Only Congress has the power to investigate the President and determine whether he did, in fact, break the law. We, the citizens of Georgia, must demand that our Senators and Congressmen defend our rights by investigating possible abuses of executive power by the Bush Administration. If the President is innocent, he has nothing to fear. The fact that he fears an inquiry should tell us a lot.

Nice of Senator Reid to give us such an easy-to-use form. :)

32. Another set of ideas I am working on for my letter
Our congress has shown little if any interest in protecting the constitution they swore to uphold. Now it is up to us to decide if we want to live with an all powerful president who can imprison us without charges, and without evidence. He can torture you and keep you in solitary for the rest of your life. Your family will never know what happened to you. He can do this without having to show just cause and there is nothing you can do about it. Your only crime might have been having a name similar to someone on Bush's enemy list.

Bush is not above the law, now that the Patriot Act II has passed, he is the law. We overthrew one King George, we do not need another.

Another:

Bush said "They hate us for our Freedom." All I can say is: stop making accommodations to terrorist. Thumb your nose at them by expanding our freedoms. Remove from office all those who promoted and voted for the Patriot Act II. We overthrew one King George, we do not need another.

More musings:

I am making a simple request of Congress. Show the same level of oversight shown when Clinton was in office. Clinton couldn't blink his eyes without a Senate inquiry.

It appears you have surrender to Bush the power of a dictator. I know he expressed the desire to be "The Dictator" back on Dec 18, 2000, but that was just a dream of his, not a command to you. He said it would be "heck of a lot easier if this was a dictatorship" but it is not your job to make his job easier.
