6. Another is always apprecciated.

There have been a few vocal people gnawing on men in general the last few days. Ironic, when you consider the fact that abortion polls almost the same between men and women. Anyway, your sentiment is greatly apprecciated. We feel the love. :)

11. I have been, ever since I can remember
I switched from Republican, to Independent, to Democrat on this single issue, all the way back to Reagan's 1st campaign.

I believe that every child has the inalienable right to be born to a mother that loves him and wants him. To achieve this, every woman must have the inalienable right to chose.

And every man has the right to chose a soul-mate that shares his beliefs on this issue.

I chose my life partner because, like me, she wanted children, more than anything else.

My wife, like me, values our children more than our very lives. If we didn't agree on this, we would not be soul-mates.

7. I'm a man and reproductive rights are a "litmus" test for the way I vote.
I consider being forced to have children a form of slavery. My concern is for all women, but particularly those in the 3rd world where poor women considered little more than chattle to be used as birth machines.

I don't care "why" women choose to have abortions. What could be a more basic human right than the right to control one's own body?

8. Thanks... but its not my fight.
Certainly I support choice for all humans in matters of personal health, but at the end of the day this is not something I should have a voice in since I am male.

Thanks for the vote of support anyway....

9. I was thrown out of one church for being pro choice.
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 09:45 PM by DanCa
When I was trying to get confirmed by my family's church the local group tried to block my confirimation by having me take pictures of women entering abortion clinics. I guess they wanted to send those photos to one of those sites that collected information on the name and doctors involved in the procedure. When I said no all hell literally broke loose. I had a minor stroke and couldn't talk for three days. This happened in October, back in 2000.

Recently in May of 2003 I was diagnoised with parkinson's diesease and my neuro says the stroke was the probable cause. Ironicly though instead of backing off I am fighting the religious right, not the left whom I love, and thier policies against stem cell research. Which they erronusly believe that the stem cells are collected from aborted fetus.

I am perhaps the only man here who has some understanding what it's like to have the religious right in control of thier bodies. Somedays like today my balance is so bad that I can't walk without falling down. At least I can move move legs and there not frozen stiff thank goodness.
Gawd I hate the religious right so many problems can be solved with modern sciencec. And I think that no one's god, religion, or government has a right to deny me a cure.

Anyhow I just wanted to let the women of DU know that I understand and share their anger at Religious in perhaps no other person can. I got news for you George Bush a disabled person's life is worth more than a fetus or embryo. How dare you say that isn't so.

10. Mixed emotions here.
In some cases, I'd like to see the father involved in the decision. I am a living example. My mother became pregnant when she was dating my father. She planned on having an abortion and told my Dad's sister. My aunt convinced her to talk to my Dad about the "problem" (Me). She did. They married. I'm here. And my parents are still happily married after 42 years.

Quite the conundrum.

12. But it was still HER choice, wasn't it?
From your story, I don't see where anyone exercized dominion, legal authority, coercion, harrassment or anything else. She made her choice. As I see it, that's the point. :hi:

16. Good point
But she was coerced by my aunt. "Either you tell him or I will."

BTW, I hate the euphemisms. Pro Choice and Pro Life. It is Pro Abortion and Anti Abortion. I'm Pro Abortion, but still ponder the father's contribution in the decision making.

I should add that my mother had two abortions. One before me and one when she was in her early 40s.

17. NO, it is PRO-CHOICE--please do not repeat the rw claptrap and memes.
pro=choice, anti-choice, very simple

as a point, are you certain your parents are "happily married" or do they merely keep up appearances? after all, divorce wasn't that easy to come by, either.

20. CERTAIN
Unless you know my parents better than me, which I doubt. I will not give you song and verse, but they lament time not together. I've seen it when my mother arrives a week early b/c my father is working. Don't even presume! Also, an apology would be nice. Maybe you should PM me.

18. Well, it sounds like she was only coerced by your aunt to tell your father
that she was pregnant. That still wasn't coercing her about her decision whether or not to carry you to term.

And I like the terms "pro-choice" and "anti-choice." What the choice IS is a secondary matter.

Wouldn't it be great if all the anti-choice people funded organizations that disbursed contraception, and/or funded impoversished women's healthcare, and/or subsidized child care and children's health care?

19. That's the biggest problem I have with anti-choice people
They want to outlaw abortion, yet they offer no other solutions to the problem. They don't want to educate anyone, they don't believe in birth control, they don't want the government or "the community" to help the mother and/or the child ... and they don't give a shit about the kid once it's out of the womb! No money for health care, food, clothing, education, shelter, etc? Too bad ... you're on your own! :eyes:

22. As George Carlin said...
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 11:49 PM by Sparkly
"If you're pre-born, you're golden. If you're pre-school, you're fucked."

I've always said that those who want to reduce abortions should focus on reducing unwanted pregnancies. And yet one of the first things BushCo did, upon taking office, was to issue the global "gag" rule, eliminating funding overseas for clinics that even BREATHED the word abortion, or lobbied their own governments for it. (That was reported as "ending funding for overseas abortion," but that's been outlawed for decades.)

Other early BushCo initiatives cut nine different programs that benefitted poor women and children, right out of the gate.

How to stem unwanted pregnancies: Contraception; education; counseling; economic empowerment, etc. -- None of which rightwingers support. (It's all about "abstinence" and "personal responsibility" and "why should I pay for YOUR immorality," etc.).

How to support women who decide to carry their pregnancies to term: Prenatal care, healthcare, childcare, job training, urban renewal, education, etc. -- None of which rightwingers support. (It's all about "Take care of your OWN kids, I happen to WORK for a living, if the schools are bad just shut them down," etc.)

They'd rather pay for the socio-economic issues that result -- they'd always rather build prisons than schools -- and point their sanctimonious, hypcritical fingers in self-righteous condemnation.

Don't get me started!!

25. Exactly, Batty!!
Nothing they do or say indicates ANY interest in the "life" of children (except, perhaps, for the adoption by a privileged few of some perfect white infants -- maybe that is their little fantasy when they think of "innocent unborn citizens," whereas if they aren't given in adoption and need social funding, or are dark-skinned, or have AIDs, or have Down's Syndrome, etc., Hell with 'em.).

26. The next time you see one, simply ask......
....."How many kids have you adopted so far? Why aren't you outside the abortion clinic right now offering to be a parent to one of these women's children? If you believe in it so much, you can at least adopt ONE unwanted kid....right.....right?"

I've done it before. They always start with "That's not the point....."

27. Oh yeah ... that's NEVER the point!
:eyes:

The point is ... they want to tell other people what to do. They want to force women to have children they don't want and then walk away from the mess they created.

It's funny ... they have no problem thinking of a three week old embryo as a human being, but when an actual child comes along, they conveniently ignore the fact that it's a human being! :grr:

24. Who's pro-abortion?
There are people who go around advocating for women to abort their fetuses/babies?

I mean, there probably are, but I assume they have and receive the same amount of credibility as folks who wear tinfoil hats or the KKK.

13. I was involved in a thread last night where I tried to explain ...
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 10:17 PM by BattyDem
that I (and other DU women) are not angry at men, we're just angry at the small-minded, control freaks - but I was still labeled a sexist by most of the guys despite my best attempts to convince them otherwise. (I STILL don't understand why I'm a sexist for being angry at men who write sexist laws, LOL!)

Oh well ... for what it's worth ...
DU MEN OF CHOICE - I'm sorry if I offended you and I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my right to choose!
