1. Not until corporate media stop saying she "admitted" she was abused.

3. The reason they phrase it this way is...
because rape is extremely underreported, and for many victims it causes extreme shame. Regardless of the fact that they are not at fault, society treats rape victims with extreme callousness--when a story comes out in the news, people immedicately start questioning the victim's character, her past, what she was wearing, did she provoke him, etc...

They say "admitted" because it is just that to many victims. "Admitting" that it happened, and "admitting" that they were too afraid or too ignorant (as is the case with many victims of child sexual abuse--they just don't know that they have rights because they are so young) to come forward earlier.

5. Yeah, I know. It just pisses me off.
:hi:

Guess I'm getting too old to cope with the transparent talking points I hear. In the year 2006, NO person (male, female, transgendered) should have to still be "admitting" they were violated. The word suggests complicity - and it makes me shake my head in disgust.

Grrr! Teri Hatcher Abused
Wednesday, March 08, 2006
By Mike Straka

"Desperate Housewife" Teri Hatcher is in a lose-lose situation after coming out with the revelation that she was sexually abused by her uncle when she was young.

Yes, it was brave of her to confront the animal who abused her, and at least one other girl who committed suicide — and as a result this monster is in jail for 14 years.

For that we say thank you, Ms. Hatcher.

But the fact that this story comes out in a cover story for Vanity Fair after its best-selling Oscar issue ever, featuring nude photos of Scarlet Johansson and Keira Knightley, is a bit disingenuous, to say the least.

Hatcher was quoted in the article saying that she had thought about coming out with her story before but didn't want it to be "tabloid" fodder.

OK ... but it's all right to be Vanity Fair fodder?

(from Fox...the epitomy of compassion.)

23. hmmm...lets see
Tabloids= rely largely on anonymous shadowy sources
Foxnews= rely largely on anonymous shadowy sources in the White house
Vanity Fair= Real investigative journal that features lots of flash and entertainers in hopes dumbed down public might read it's real stories.

2. It helps for a public figure to "come out" like this---
It certainly isn't the be-all, end-all, but it does help shine some light on a widespread problem.

In the United States, a woman is raped (whether it be by a stranger, an acquaintance, or all too often, a husband or other significant other) a minimum of every 5 minutes. In the time it will take for you to read through this thread, a woman will have been raped somewhere in our country. One every 5 minutes is the most conservative estimate available--more comprehensive studies (such as those not relying solely on law enforcement records--remember, rape is the number one underreported crime in the world) put it at closer to one every 3 minutes.

(I would love to post some more information right now, but I have work to do and it is already almost 2 am--maybe tomorrow.)

4. I heard a reporter earlier say "Hatcher "claims" to have been abused"
"Claims"??? He made it sound like she was doing it for attention. :wtf:

19. I've heard that too
Not just about Hatcher but in the past about other people who were raped and molested. It has always upset me, especially in cases like this when her uncle was convicted. If she had been robbed or in a car accident I know damn well they wouldn't say she "claimed" it happened.

9. Oprah was molested as a child
Nope, didn't change a thing. So I doubt this will either, sad to say. They're starting to blame the St. Guillen girl for her murder, I don't know if it will ever change.

10. You know what?
I don't think it can 'change' per se, but I'd like to see them create hospitalization and health care for victims.

I'd also like to see the police stop interragating victims and treating them as if they're the rapists.

12. Rape victims are not considered "victims" by society--
this has been true for a very long time, and the only thing that will stop it is a huge movement, made up of men and women, willing to challenge the established social order.

11. Not really..
I read that about 1 in 3 girls are molested..so there are probably more influential survivors in most households.. a celebrity may shine a light on an issue, but the hard work has to be done in the intimate family circles..

14. It tells you the extent of our people though
months on the missing white women, and today the google search is cluttered with this. I was not going to write about "her" per se, but then I decided if she would shine the light on those other issues then maybe we could at least help people.

20. I will say: good for her!
It's very difficult for anyone to do confront their demons and do something like this... but at least we know it won't be splashed all over the media and make the cover of "People" magazine. Good for her, for helping stop this fucker from hurting any more kids.

22. I hate the "she's a slut" defense
because it should make no difference if she had sex with a hundred guys before a rapist assaulted her in the worst way. She said yes to them, not to the rapist. Women get to determine who they have sex with on a case by case basis, on an incident by incident basis.

If she had sex with you once (or several times), she still gets to say no.

If she had sex for money, she is not obligated to give it away for free.

If she lets you pay for the date, she is not required to be anything more than company.

If you gave her something tremendously expensive, she can say thank you in any way she wants. The words "thank you" should be good enough, a card would be better. That thank you does not have to be in the form of sex.

If she had sex with others, whether once or many times, she is not automatically assumed to have consented to every time with every man.

Once society gets this, we might actually prosecute some rapists successfully.

blaming the victim!
