Threatening Letter Received Wednesday

GRANITE BAY, Calif. -- Staffers at Rep. John Doolittle's office in Granite Bay found a letter with a suspicious substance inside Wednesday, prompting a call to hazardous materials crews.

Hazmat teams responded to Doolittle's office just after 12:30 p.m. and evacuations began immediately.

Authorities said a caseworker in the office opened an envelope addressed to the Republican congressman and found a mysterious white substance and a threatening letter inside. The substance touched the skin of the worker.

"She felt a slight burning sensation on her fingers," Placer County Sheriff's Department Lt. George Malim said.
