Scientifically, quite valuable. But it will NOT see in the Visual Spectrum--no more pretty pictures.

Well, I guess that's a judgment call.

But here's an image from Spitzer, the current infrared space telescope:



This isn't what the Eta Carinae region would look like to the naked eye, but in order to study the images, astronomers assign a visible color to each invisible infrared "color." So radiation detected at 8 microns might be represented in red, while radiation detected at 4 microns might be represented in blue. The end result ends up looking pretty good, I think.

James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) - the JWST, previously known as the NGST (Next Generation Space Telescope) is projected to replace Hubble (HST) around 2010. Its segmented, deployable mirror will be over twice as large, increasing angular resolution noticeably, and sensitivity dramatically. Unlike Hubble, JWST will observe in the infrared, in order to penetrate dust at cosmological distances. This means it will continue some Spitzer capabilities, while some Hubble capabilities will be lost (as currently planned). New advances in ground telescopes will take over some visible observations, but fewer in ultraviolet.

20. This is only tangentially related, but it's been interesting to see how

the depictions of space in movies and games have changed since Hubble started doing it's work. It used to be depicted as a great, black void. Just an endless nightscape. Newer depictions are just gorgeous- obviously inspired by the images from Hubble. It's all color and energy.

I was so impressed by the pictures that I did a search for Hubble and found the link below. You can download high resolution versions of the images for your desktop. I downloaded about 20 of the 49 wallpapers available and loaded them into Webshots on my desktop. Now I get some of these images rotated every hour! Thank you for the idea!
