Freepers on woman getting fired for having an Air America bumper sticker..

There is an article out in the NC times here in San Diego about a woman who was slandered by her boss and fired for having an Air America bumper sticker on her car. Why did I dare to even think that the freeps would not think this is OK, or against basic freedom of speech and expression? Yes, those freepers. The ones who like to call themselves "strict constitutionalists." They don't even see irony of how this could be turned and used on them for their "rush is right" bumper stickers.

Well, at least we know who comprises the 39% that still approve Bush in the polls now.

Now:

Just let the love and tolerance wash all over you. I actually cherry picked the really nice ones for everyone to see the black hearts of the conservatives absolutely bared. It didn't take too long to even do THAT actually. Anonymity on the web does that you know...



after seeing the sticker, the employer commented that the woman could be a member of al-Qaida.

"...COULD be"...?!? :)

I'm struck by how the normally not-so-far-right NC Times refers the station as "left-wing Air America". I wonder if they would call KSDO the local affiliate of "right-wing EIB". Of course not; that's just radio.

It's the framing.

Employee means, one who belongs. A contributer to something bigger than she is. Part of family of the company.

An associate? One we just "associate with". Someone to keep at a distance. One we know, but will not welcome into the fold, since we only need their labor temorarily.

That term is one of my biggest pet peeves! The other is "Human Resources". I am not a resource, like raw steel or coal. I am a thinking, contributing person.

Oh' on the freepers? Perfect reason for abortion, right there.

I've noticed on other sites I've visited,(not political websites) that they seem more apt these days to state their political affiliation. (i.e. My name is blank, I live in CA and I'm a Republican). This is interesting to me, as it usually is in the context of people introducing themselves--usually they are the only ones sharing their political stance, which seems odd.

I feel in time this is going to come back to bite them in the ass.

For me it's kind of like the Lincoln quote, that I believe says something to the effect of, "...it is better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

31. California IS quasi at-will
California is not a "Right To Work" state, but that's an entirely different deal (RTW has to do with unions, AW has to do with job termination protections).

Legally, California is an At-Will state, but there are certain legal protections that give Calfornians more rights than most other At-Will states.

1) First, you cannot fire someone for legally protected activities. If you employer asks you to break the law, you refuse, and he fires you, you have a valid lawsuit against him. If he fires you because you're black, you have a valid lawsuit. If he fires you because you filed a workmans comp claim, you have a valid lawsuit. You ONLY have valid suits for these reasons because specific laws have been passed in this state protecting these types of things. There's no law requiring employers to hire people who listen to the radio, so this doesn't apply to the AA listener.

2) You can't fire a person in conflict with an existing contract. If the contract specifies terms of employment, the employer is bound to them...or you can sue them blind. Where this gets fun is that California ALSO recognizes implied contracts. If your employer creates the impression that he has an open and tolerant workplace, and the employer then fires you because you admit to being a Democrat, you can sue him because he has implied that certain working conditions would be provided. If, however, the boss makes it clear from Day 1 that non-Republican's aren't welcome, there's no case.

3) The Good Faith exception. Many people assume that the Good Faith exception removes California's At Will status, but it only offers protection in limited cirsumstances. It requires that employers give valid reasons for terminating employees, and that they cannot be terminated out of malice. You actually CAN fire people here just because you don't like their haircut, if you can prove that their haircut is disruptive to the workplace. In the case of the AA listener, the employer can simply argue that he has a bias against Democrats and didn't feel that he could maintain a working relationship with her anymore. Since bias against political affiliations isn't illegal, that would qualify as a valid reason for termination. As a business owner in California, I can't just walk in and fire my employees because I'm in a bad mood. I also can't fire people for fraudulent reasons (i.e., laying off the 54 year old employee with 30 years on the job to save money on retirement benefits). If I can find any non-illegal, non-fraudulent reasons to lay them off, however, it's entirely within my right to do so (for the record, I've only ever fired one employee and he completely deserved it).

24. Well, to be perfectly fair, I will probably be "subtly" double checking
the voting preferences of any future employees I may ever hire in the future (not likely, but it could happen). Anybody who tells me they voted for the Shrub twice won't be getting hired because that is one sure sign of an uninformed Moran.

I'll be subtle about it though -- wouldn't want to get in trouble with the law or anything. Maybe I'll sell them a bridge or two while I'm at it. Hmmm....There could be some good money to be had, because Freepers will obviously buy pretty much about any line of bull that is out there -- yet another reason to make sure they aren't employed by me! :)

And before any flames start, I don't want to work for any Freepers myself, and I'm in a position where I can enforce that edict, so if that means I'm not in a position to be treated like crap by a Scum Sucking Bush Supporter, I'm okay with that, too. I won't even buy pizza from what used to be my favorite place ever since I saw the picture of the "Bush Rally" with their ticket on the wall of the establishment!

I don't generally hang out with people that endorse that agenda either. What's wrong with your not wanting to work with people that would create a hostile work environment for you?

In this case, I would be inclined to think that turn about is fair play.

If they are endorsing not employing liberals, what's wrong with your wanting to make sure that a few have an income instead of an idiot. They don't need your job or help, right? Ultimately they are superior, so why would they need to take a job from one of us? Right?

47. It's time to ban "at will" employment!
This kind of garbage should not be legal anywhere. The car is her property, not the employer's. But, with at will employment, the employer has no accountability. Giving an employer absolute power over an employee like that is the opposite of freedom. I heard on the Ed Schultz show today that she is suing, and I hope she wins! I would love to see the ACLU get involved in this one. Last time I heard about something like this, a woman was fired for a Kerry sticker. John Kerry heard about it and got her a job at the DNC!
