UAE Onine News Org. Says Ports Deal Not Dead: UAE Finances U.S. Debt!! -->
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 03:59 PM by Dr. Jones
BINGO! Now I know one possible reason why this is so damn important to Chimpy! If this deal doesn't go through, all his gross spending on his war of choice will crush the U.S. economy on HIS WATCH!! The question is, why do we have a country who has financed terrorism and harbored terrorists financing our debt? Do they have us by the balls or WHAT?

This article is STRANGE. After I heard that DP World relinquished its port operations to an American company, I checked around to see if this news was reflected in any UAE news outlets. What I found was pretty interesting. This article is dated TODAY. And DP World said "nothing has changed" and that they are "not at the point" where they would relinquish the ports deal. So what made them GET to that point?

And why is DP World the "savior" in this second instance, the first being when they "gave us" a 45-day extension to investigate? Why is a foreign company dictating American business and national security matters? Or is Bush himself SO wrapped up in trying to please and reward the UAE and SO wrapped up in his business deals that he has no compunction with making backroom deals with a shady state-owned and run company?

Something STINKS, and I'm not sure whether it's coming from the White House, the UAE, or BOTH.

Dubai Ports World presses on with port takeover
(Reuters)
9 March 2006

DUBAI - Dubai Ports World is pressing ahead with a takeover that gives it control of six major US ports despite a Congress committee vote to block the deal, sources familiar with the deal said on Thursday.

Government and company officials in the United Arab Emirates declined comment on Wednesday's vote by US lawmakers to block the deal on the grounds that handing the ports over to a Gulf Arab state-owned firm would threaten US national security.

But the sources said the vote had not taken Dubai Ports any closer to relinquishing the six ports at the center of a political firestorm. 'The vote in the House of Representatives has not change anything in that respect. We are not at that point,' one Dubai-based source said.

Analysts said the political furor was bound to provoke businesses in the world's biggest oil exporting region, which is an increasingly important source of financing for the huge US current account deficit. 'It's American double standards. Do you think that businesses and governments here won't react and even retaliate?' said Wadah Al Taha of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi.

I thought it was very strange that Warner was the one to announce it to start with. In all the world, Warner, who was already a Bush admin cheerleader on the deal.

28. another snip from the end
Dubai Ports officials said they were pushing ahead with plans to integrate British ports group P&O which runs the US ports. A Dubai Ports spokesman said the company would soon announce the de-listing of P&O now that shareholders had approved the $6.8 billion takeover.

Dubai Ports Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and Chief Executive Mohammed Sharaf fly to London this week to discuss integration of the two companies which make up the world's third largest ports group.

'We are evaluating the situation,' Bin Sulayem said.

The UAE is a close ally of Washington and a frequent port of call for American warships. Concerns are growing that the fallout from the ports row will affect US economic ties with the Gulf.

UAE Economy Minister Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi said last week the furor could prompt other countries to divert funds away from the United States.

20. My take: Bushco and the UAE took a long look at their "big
picture" - the massive defense contracts with the UAE, military staging facilities, etc. - and in light of the clear intent of Congress, they decided losing a few millions in North American terminal contracts was a good trade off and a way to save face. I would assume the UAE "directed" DP World to divest N American operations. Nice little cover for Mr. Bush as well. He was going to get walloped in Congress over this. I agree, it's still not over and the devil's in the details, but financially it's a drop in the bucket to the UAE.

29. More from the end of the article:
The UAE is a close ally of Washington and a frequent port of call for American warships. Concerns are growing that the fallout from the ports row will affect US economic ties with the Gulf.

UAE Economy Minister Sheikha Lubna Al Qassimi said last week the furor could prompt other countries to divert funds away from the United States.

American businesses in the UAE warned on Wednesday that trade worth more than $8 billion between the United States and the United Arab Emirates could be in jeopardy.

42. There's another aspect to this that should not be overlooked.
U.S. multi-national corporations have been exploiting countries around the world in much the same way EXCEPT if they don't get their way, somehow they manage to invoke U.S. Military activities.

The American people REALLY need to grasp an understanding of exactly how these heartless corporacrats have spread horrific economic oppression inflaming the hatred we see directed towards us from around the globe. That information gives new meaning to the events of 9/11.

50. That's because you assume
that national security means security of the American people. It has always been the security of corporations and their bidders - i.e. the alliance between the the economic elite, political elite and military elite.

The irony of the exposure re this port deal is that the anti-globalization and neo-liberal groups have demonstrated yet again that their position is correct.

Everything else is a RW smokscreen.

BTW here are American companies that run American ports. Did they get to bid on this deal?

There are three U.S. companies -- Seattle-based Stevedoring Services of America; Oakland, Calif.-based Marine Terminals Corporation; and Elisabeth, N.J.-based Maher Terminals, Inc

but in all actuality the deal is still moving forward as orignally planned. Like they are passing the rights over to a "US Entity" - which is really just a subcontractor that they will indirectly control anyways.

I imagine that the SA and UAE are sitting on a pile of illiquid dollars. No one wants 'em. If they dumped them, it'd cause a major depression on the dollar value. So this deal allows them to convert dollars to tangible assets. Bush and his Big Oil buddies are arranging the swap out. I expect to see more of our infrastructure sold off in the future.
