Update 17: Iraqis Hang 13 Insurgents; Blasts Kill 11

Iraqi authorities hanged 13 insurgents Thursday, marking the first time militants have been executed in the country since Saddam Hussein was ousted, the government said. Explosions killed 11 civilians and wounded 19 as a dust storm enveloped the capital.

The U.S. military, meanwhile, confirmed that a mass abduction from a security firm was the work of kidnappers masquerading as Interior Ministry commandos.

The Cabinet announcement listed the name of only one of those hanged, Shukair Farid, a former policeman in the northern city of Mosul, who allegedly confessed that he had worked with Syrian foreign fighters to enlist fellow Iraqis to kill police and civilians.

"The competent authorities have today carried out the death sentences of 13 terrorists," according to the statement.

6. so it wasn't the Interior Ministry, huh?
So the US military has "confirmed" that the kidnappers were masquerading as our allies in the Iraqi government. Nevermind that the Shia-led interior ministry is apparently summarily executing people left and right. Nevermind that these hapless victims were taken away in matching SUV's. Nevermind that motive would lead one to suspect the Interior Ministry anyway.

It's all settled now. Our military commanders, under the grandfatherly tutelege of Donald Rumsfeld, have said it was someone else--some bad guys from somewhere. My guess is that they're foreign dead-enders.
