1. Report it to the cops,
inform your bank and the SS office.

2. If it was stolen, report it to the police.
Notify all the credit bureaus to inform you whenever credit is opened in your name.

I believe the Federal Trade Commission has some really good information on their site. You might try there.

4. NEVER
NEVER carry your SS #. Certainly not your card. If your state still uses your SS# as your license number, ask for a random number, instead.

If you do what these good folk told you, you'll be fine. You're only liable for the first fifty bucks, if anything's charged on the credit card.

DMV will tell you what to do about the license.

I'm so sorry this happened to you.

6. Report it to the cops, get a new license
and congratulations to you and me for having the brains to keep our cards separate from that license. I lost mine on a plane 3 weeks ago. The airline is "looking for it."

My finances are so convoluted at this point that I can't conceive of anyone wanting to steal my identity, but I'll be on the lookout for all sorts of crap coming in if the airline doesn't come through.

7. You might consider putting a fraud alert
on your credit report. Just in case. It works for 90 days, iirc. You can call one of the big three - TransUnion, for example- and trigger all three just by contacting that one.

It helps keep people from opening instant credit in your name. It doesn't completely prevent it, and it may be a bit of a hassle for you if you want to get instant credit from somewhere. But you may get a bit of peace of mind from it.

8. Contact the credit folks

The three big ones are Esperion, Equifax, and TransAmerica. Make sure you get a flag on your credit so no one can open accounts in your name. Get a police report to document the theft. That's about all you can do.

9. STOP PAYMENT BEFORE REVIEW
Of anything done in your name that you can acknoledge or deny. Instance by instance. It's tough but it will clear YOUR name and provide evidence of mischarges by those involved with acting in your name against you.
