I'm now listening to folks on TV crying that the UAE may take economic revenge because of the US opposition to the port deal.
I don't get it. We still do business with them. They can dock there ships here and we have diplomatic relations with them. Since 9/11, they have been pretty good allies, but so has Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and I don't want to turn our port security over to them, either.
No one says we should bomb Dubai, all we are saying is that our ports should be run by Americans or at least long standing allies such as Great Britain. Certainly an ally with a pretty good record for four and half years doesn't qualify. The fact that they harbored terrorists that attacked us less than five years ago should be of some concern.
Didn't bin Laden start his crazed "war" on America because Bush I housed US soldiers on Saudi land. Not that we traded with the Saudis or bought their oil and sold them air craft. It was that we were there. Now our "new" allies should understand that since 9/11 we might want our ports of entry guarded by our own citizens or at the very least, an ally that has stood by us, without ever wavering, whether we were right or wrong, for over a century. You know, longevity has some value. For God's sake, four and a half years of "good behavior" may allow you to trade with us, and have common military and diplomatic ties, but excuse us if we want to be a little cautious about our safety here at home.
If the UAE can't understand that than I say "Fuck Them". Obviously they couldn't be trusted in the first place.
