Memo to Sam Brownback: Keep your nose out of D.C.'s business.
It appears as though Republican Senator Sam Brownback has had another one of his brilliant ideas! He wants to experiment on the good people of our nation's capitol.
He is proposing a flat federal income tax for residents of the District of Columbia. At the heart of his proposal: giving D.C. residents the option to "voluntarily pay federal taxes through a system that scraps tax breaks, like mortgage interest and charitable donation deductions, in favor of a lower tax rate."
D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton opposes the idea, saying it would gentrification. "Shadow" Senator Paul Strauss remarked "It is morally wrong for Congress to use D.C. as an experiment. I also find it alarming that this Congress, which has all but bankrupted the federal government, now wants to change the system in D.C., which has a budget surplus." And the people of D.C. said "Amen!"
Here's an idea for Sam Brownback: If you truly have an interest in the citizens of D.C. (which I am sure you don't), then how about becoming a proponent for D.C. statehood?
The residents of the District of Columbia are being taxed without representation. They pay federal taxes just like every other American citizen. Yet, they have no adequate representation on Capitol Hill. And that defies everything that this country is supposed to stand for.
