Ports Issue NOT over - John Warner plans to revive it
Senate Armed Services Chairman John Warner is planning a last-ditch legislative effort to rescue a state-owned Dubai company's embattled bid to take over some operations at six U.S. ports.

Warner's measure will be introduced ``within a week'' and would require DP World to ensure the security of the facilities, spokesman John Ullyot said. He said the legislation is still being drafted and declined to say what it would require of the company, which is buying the operations of London-based Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. for $6.8 billion.

Even before the legislation has been formally offered, there are clear signs that it will face long and perhaps insurmountable odds in a Congress increasingly hostile to the ports deal.

Bob Stevenson, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican, said he wasn't certain Warner's measure could pass the Senate. And the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Peter King, predicted that any 11th-hour effort to save the deal by transferring the U.S. port operations to an American subsidiary would fail and that the Warner legislation was headed for defeat.

Sheesh! The American people are against this deal - apparently those in office "representing" Americans have forgotten who they work for?

10. Warner was WAY to ready when the deal went south yesterday.
He is the de facto spokesperson for Dubai Ports. You'd think a senatorial job would keep him busy enough? Ah and I'm sure it's out of the kindness of his heart. BULLSHIT.

13. Warner says "A price will be paid" if the US denies this ports deal.
snip

As opposition to the sale has grown in Congress, Warner, a 79-year-old Virginia Republican, has emerged as one of three influential Republicans who have defended the Bush administration for approving the acquisition in January.

``I may be the last man standing here'' supporting the deal, Warner told reporters yesterday in Washington. He said that ``there's going to be a price to be paid'' if the U.S. denies DP World the U.S.-based assets of P&O, which include terminals at the ports of Miami, New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Newark.

BTW, the other 2 *influential Republicans* pushing this deal:

snip

Also defending the deal are Republican Senators Ted Stevens of Alaska, 82, who chairs the Commerce Committee, and John McCain, 69, a three-term senator from Arizona.

IMHO, McCain is forever dirtied with this deal. It will be a mistake if voters ever forget his blind support of this malignant administration.

14. Good
I hope the Repugs battle long and hard for this one. In fact, I hope the battle goes on into October when it'll do us the most good before the election.

18. I'm now thinking we need to uncover how Warner profits from this

Every time one of these scandals happen, and some Congressman digs in or draws a line on the wrong side of the issue, we then learn that he/she is PERSONALLY profiting.

I guarantee we're going to find that his brother/wife/aide etc. is making lots of money on the Dubai deal!

Sorry to display my cynicism, but it's just happened so many times...

19. Interesting...
force senate Repubs to have to go on the record supporting the president's very unpopular deal - during primary season. No doubt there are some fellow repubs who are more than irritated with Warner at this moment.
