Connecting the DP World Port Deal Dots: BUSH IN BED WITH UAE -->
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 11:25 AM by Dr. Jones
I found it VERY CONVENIENT that the UAE/DP World came to Bush's rescue yesterday. Bush KNEW his butt was toast in his support of the UAE ports deal. There was NO WAY for him to win this one. Both Congress and the American people were against this deal, and Bush was likely told that Congress was planning to vote against it, thus painting him into a corner. A Bush veto would only incur a Congressional override, which would have been very embarassing to Bush, and would have made him look even weaker - possibly even costing the Republicans control of Congress come November.

Sometime yesterday morning, a call was made. Despite DP World's threats of retaliation if the deal was quashed, Bush's best buds would never let him down. So just when Congress was about to declare the deal dead in the water, DP World/UAE finds a way to assuage the Americans and to save Bush, their close business ally, in the process. They agree to take the fall and claim that they are "transferring" (READ: Not "SELLING") port operations to an "American" company. We are never told WHAT American company, and the whole deal is arbitrary and vague. But the goal is accomplished - the original deal is dead, and DP World/UAE saves the day.

What happened to DP World's and the UAE's threats of retaliation if the U.S. quashes this deal? How did they go from threatening the U.S. if the deal doesn't go through to conceding so nicely and quietly? I'll tell you one reason. The PORTS deal is only ONE deal. There's other deals going on, in particular, a deal for the UAE to purchase a British manufacturer of U.S. military engines, aircraft, and vehicles. This would effectively hand over management and operations of 9 military production factories, including some in Georgia and Connecticut, to the UAE (Source: http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=72060)! So as you can see, this issue is not by a longshot overwith.

I PRAY Congress isn't fooled by this shell game. But if it wasn't obvious to you before, it should be CLEARLY obvious to you now. Bush is IN BED with those whose who have the potential to have a significant negative impact on our national security, yet out the other side of his mouth, he's "talking tough" and leading a world crusade against terrorism. Makes you wonder!

DOBBS: President Bush's family and members of the Bush administration have long-standing business connections with the United Arab Emirates, and those connections are raising new concerns and questions tonight in some quarters about why the president is defying his very own party leadership and his party in defending the Dubai port deal.

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): The oil-rich United Arab Emirates is a major investor in The Carlyle Group, the private equity investment firm where President Bush's father once served as senior adviser and is a who's who of former high-level government officials. Just last year, Dubai International Capital, a government-backed buyout firm, invested in an $8 billion Carlyle fund. Another family connection, the president's brother, Neil Bush, has reportedly received funding for his educational software company from the UAE investors. A call to his company was not returned.

Another administration connection, President Bush chose a Dubai Ports World executive to head the U.S. Maritime Administration. David Sanborn, the former director of Dubai Ports' European and Latin American operations, he was tapped just last month to lead the agency that oversees U.S. port operations.

The United Arab Emirates not only has friends in high places in government, it also has high-powered lobbying connections. This oil- rich nation has been lavishing hundreds of thousands of dollars on K Street, lobbying friends to push its point of view and its goals. One of those friends we found out today is none other than Senator Dole, former Senator Dole.

2. I agree!!! Those asserting xenophobia should pay attention as well.
Carlyle Group is directly tied to Dubai International Capital.

http://www.dubaiic.com/portfolio.htm

This was merely a big money deal with added incentives (escape from compliance with U.S. laws) and NO concerns about American economic or national security. It was also a deal the PNACers wanted because Dubai provides port space to launch their profiteering wars in M.E.

Thank you VERY MUCH for laying out this analysis. It's important we don't get pulled back into the manipulative propaganda intended to shame people into supporting a deal that will NOT be substantively different from the one being proposed.

4. If we had a liberal or even fair media, it'd be all over the place...
because we have a corporate media, this is considered surprising news.

7. Yep -
Michael Moore laid out the Saudi-Bin Laden-Bush connection. And now, we are laying out and exposing the UAE-Bush connection. Geesh, the Bush family sure has some strange bedfellows...ones that potentially have the intent to harm the U.S.

So, we look through the looking glass a bit clearer. Bush...Bin Laden and family...Saudi Arabia...UAE...9/11...Carlyle Group...backroom deals...Iraq...

What next?

8. Some of the posts convicting us as,...
,...bigots and/or xenophones made me extremely suspicious under the circumstances ESPECIALLY when BushCO and the DoD were asserting the same yesterday right after the faux "dead deal" whack delivered by Warner.

9. I'll take the political opportunist label personally.
It's about time Dems capitalized on a * f-up. I'd like to remind the REAL bigots that we invaded and murdered innocent people in a country that posed no threat to the people of the United States.

10. It was never about race,
it was about national security. The racism issue was a somewhat effective Rovian deception, and unfortunately, some on this board even fell for it.

14. That particular "Rovian" tactic was just laughable after 4+ years,...
,...of the administration intentionally whipping out "islamofascists" and evil Arab/Muslim "terrorists" and those Islamic "suicide bombers" and on and on and on to manipulate with fear, forcing approval of mass destruction in Afghanistan and Iraq. :eyes: And, "unfortunately, some on this board,...fell for it." Whew, boy.

Repugs who merrily disparaged Arabs as "ragheads" and such suddenly agreed with the admin that it was really all about racism. Hypocrisy!

16. Ultimately, it's all about the BushCO/neoconster economic policies:
sell people off/out for the lowest possible price in order to concentrate wealth in the hands of the few biggie corporacrats. Human rights or freedom or security or democracy or laws be damned. It's all about funneling human resources and wealth to the top 1% on the global economic ladder. No possible way economic justice or fairness can ever EVER be obtained under these type of policies.

Never about race? Give me a break. How many variations of "I don't want Arabs controlling our ports" have you seen on this board?

I don't hang out with Karl Rove and I don't take talking points from him.

Opposition to this deal was largely about nativism and xenophobia. And I'm not sure it serves progressives well to feed those particular ugly beasts just to score some political points.

This "national security" thing is a red herring, given that 95% of cargo containers go uninspected regardless of who has the port concession.

19. Bush dynasty is always the same
From WWI to the present, selling weapons to both sides, war profiteering, making the industrial war complex the government of the select plutocracy. Like several generations of horse thieves but worse in that they belong to an international gentleman's club of horse thieves. No matter how the wheel turns it will come up cash and carry for the war cartel.

Always the drama of war and conflict ignores the club at the top. The odd monarchy or dictatorship burns out and is overthrown but business goes on. Multi-generational and mafia-like in every facet.

22. I speak for no one here but myself when I ask sarcastically....
...and of course BushCo had nothing to do with 9/11 what-so-ever. None of BushCo's (now blantantly obvious loyal) ties to ME states, corporations, ME wars, ME oil....none of this would have anything to do with 9/11. Nah.....couldn't be. To think that there was a tie you would have to think there was some sort of...conspiracy. And we can't have that, now can we? :sarcasm:

On a serious note, the public is becoming more and more aware of these dubious relationships and just how loyal BushCo is to them: More loyal to them than to the American public. The public is steadily being brought down the Rabbit Hole of truth. Maybe some day we'll all find out how deep this hole goes....
