I found it VERY CONVENIENT that the UAE/DP World came to Bush's rescue yesterday. Bush KNEW his butt was toast in his support of the UAE ports deal. There was NO WAY for him to win this one. Both Congress and the American people were against this deal, and Bush was likely told that Congress was planning to vote against it, thus painting him into a corner. A Bush veto would only incur a Congressional override, which would have been very embarassing to Bush, and would have made him look even weaker - possibly even costing the Republicans control of Congress come November.
Sometime yesterday morning, a call was made. Despite DP World's threats of retaliation if the deal was quashed, Bush's best buds would never let him down. So just when Congress was about to declare the deal dead in the water, DP World/UAE finds a way to assuage the Americans and to save Bush, their close business ally, in the process. They agree to take the fall and claim that they are "transferring" (READ: Not "SELLING") port operations to an "American" company. We are never told WHAT American company, and the whole deal is arbitrary and vague. But the goal is accomplished - the original deal is dead, and DP World/UAE saves the day.
What happened to DP World's and the UAE's threats of retaliation if the U.S. quashes this deal? How did they go from threatening the U.S. if the deal doesn't go through to conceding so nicely and quietly? I'll tell you one reason. The PORTS deal is only ONE deal. There's other deals going on, in particular, a deal for the UAE to purchase a British manufacturer of U.S. military engines, aircraft, and vehicles. This would effectively hand over management and operations of 9 military production factories, including some in Georgia and Connecticut, to the UAE (Source:

I PRAY Congress isn't fooled by this shell game. But if it wasn't obvious to you before, it should be CLEARLY obvious to you now. Bush is IN BED with those whose who have the potential to have a significant negative impact on our national security, yet out the other side of his mouth, he's "talking tough" and leading a world crusade against terrorism. Makes you wonder!
DOBBS: President Bush's family and members of the Bush administration have long-standing business connections with the United Arab Emirates, and those connections are raising new concerns and questions tonight in some quarters about why the president is defying his very own party leadership and his party in defending the Dubai port deal.
CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over):
The oil-rich United Arab Emirates is a major investor in The Carlyle Group, the private equity investment firm where President Bush's father once served as senior adviser and is a who's who of former high-level government officials. Just last year, Dubai International Capital, a government-backed buyout firm, invested in an $8 billion Carlyle fund. Another family connection, the president's brother, Neil Bush, has reportedly received funding for his educational software company from the UAE investors. A call to his company was not returned. Another administration connection, President Bush chose a Dubai Ports World executive to head the U.S. Maritime Administration. David Sanborn, the former director of Dubai Ports' European and Latin American operations, he was tapped just last month to lead the agency that oversees U.S. port operations.
The United Arab Emirates not only has friends in high places in government, it also has high-powered lobbying connections. This oil- rich nation has been lavishing hundreds of thousands of dollars on K Street, lobbying friends to push its point of view and its goals. One of those friends we found out today is none other than Senator Dole, former Senator Dole.
