Bong hits for Jesus
First amemndment issue:

Court upholds "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" student banner

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An Alaska high school violated a student's free speech rights by suspending him after he unfurled a banner reading "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" across the street from the school, a federal court ruled on Friday.

Joseph Frederick, a student at Juneau-Douglas High School in Alaska, displayed the banner -- which refers to smoking marijuana -- in January 2002 to try to get on television as the Olympic torch relay was passing the school.

Principal Deborah Morse seized the banner and suspended the 18-year-old for 10 days, saying he had undermined the school's educational mission and anti-drug stance.

2. I'm getting REAL sick of the "off the property" bullshit that's been going
on lately.

From employers firing employees who smoke to student activities off school property, it seems more and more that Authority is trying to say that once it exerts authority over ONE aspect of one's life, it holds authority over ALL aspects of one's life and

THAT

IS

NOT

RIGHT.

NO employer should have ANY discretion in its employees' activities when off the property AND off the clock, REGARDLESS of what those activities are. I would go so far as to state that being temporarily jailed, FOR ANY REASON, is NOT sufficient cause to terminate employment.

I would hold businesses to the common-sense line: if you terminate an employee for being arrested for any reason while off the clock, you owe that employee back pay for a 24/7 workweek from their date of hire. Similarly, the administrator who made the decision to suspend at the school in question in the article deserves to be sued into the ground (NOT the school in general).

We HAVE to stop accepting that we are beholden to certain form of authority all the time, or we WILL lose our individuality in the effort to conform to 'policy'.

I do not recognise 'policy' as a valid form of authority. I recognise law, and its officers, as the ONLY form of authority above me, and ONLY at certain times. We humans are undeserving of putting ourselves above any other.

We need to end this trend.

6. "The court also cleared the way for Frederick to seek damages, ..."
I hope he collects enough (from both the district and Ms. Morse personally) to pay his total costs for a college education ... through law school!
