Kucinich: Port Deal Not Dead; Introduces ResolutionTo Obtain Documents
Kucinich: Port Deal Not Dead;
Introduces A Resolution to Obtain Documents And Force Congressional Oversight

Submitted by davidswanson on Fri, 2006-03-10 20:13. Congress

Congress Must Act To Prevent Similar Deals In The Future

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Ranking Member of the House Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations, today, introduced a rarely used Congressional procedure called a Resolution of Inquiry to demand documents from the Administration about the security review of the port deal that would have allowed a United Arab Emirates (UAE) company to take control of six US ports.

A Resolution of Inquiry is a privileged resolution used to obtain documents from the Executive Branch. Under House rules, Kucinich's resolution is referred to the House Financial Services Committee, and action must be taken in committee within 14 legislative days.

Kucinich's resolution requires the President, and the Secretary of Homeland Security, to turn over to Congress:

· All documents in their possession regarding the December 13, 2005, Coast Guard Intelligence Coordination Center document.

· All documents in their possession regarding discussions between the White House and Dubai Ports World relating to the Committee on Foreign Investment process for approving the acquisition.

· All documents in their possession regarding discussions between the White House and the Carlyle Group between October 1, 2005, and March 2, 2006.

"The port deal is not dead," stated Kucinich. "Much as they would like to, Congress must not allow this Administration to sweep this under the rug. Congress must fulfill its Constitutional duty and provide aggressive oversight of this ill-advised and misguided deal. Congress must continue to investigate this deal to ensure similar deals, which put the security of our nation at grave risk, can not happen again."

52. the buyout, which did not go to the highest bidder
esoteric source, but interesting comment on the port deal nonetheless:
http://zetatalk.com/index/zeta263.htm

begins with:
"...examine the buyout, which did not go to the highest bidder. Why would the stockholders approve of a deal giving them substantially less money, to sell to the UAE, than selling to Singapore would have provided? Indonesia is not only a staunch ally of the US and Britain, but also had no links to terrorism or support of 911 and Bin Laden.

The stockholders of the private British company up for sale, of course, were not presented with an option, nor are private companies that well regulated so few recourses were available to the stockholders, so they took the option they were given. Grab the money and run. The known links to terrorism the UAE presented included hosting Bin Laden for hospital care in the months leading into 911, visiting him in Pakistan, being the home country for a number of the 911 terrorists, and laundering money for the 911 crowd. With this rap sheet, why would the British and the US want to encourage their control of key ports in the US..."

==In the grand strategy of the Great Game, confusing your political base is merely part of the hustle.

a couple weeks ago. So far, nothing has been given up. Could be why the Bushies aren't fighting so hard now.

All documents in their possession regarding discussions between the White House and the Carlyle Group between October 1, 2005, and March 2, 2006.

I would wager that we will find the mother lode of answers within the clandestine activity of this privately owned investment web run by the BFEE and terrorist-supporting states.

These people never let U. S. national security get in the way of a good "bidness deal".

25. Wonder if the ports deal was payback from Harken energy days
I was thinking about that today. Shrub Inc got bailed out by a Saudi at one point and landed a sweet heart deal with Baharain. It'd be interesting if some of the same players are involved in the Dubai Ports company.

player in this port sale scheme, and of course, they're also an arm - as secret as they can make it - of the Bush criminal cabal:

thread title (2-20-06 GD-P): the connection to it all - Carlyle Group involved in port security deal
Comment/excerpt: “MM&P-contracted CSX Lines, the US-flag container shipping subsidiary of CSX Inc., will be sold to the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm based in Washington, DC for $300M. The acquisition will give Carlyle control over the nation's largest Jones Act container fleet and will add to the company's growing transportation portfolio. CSX Lines will be renamed Horizon Lines LLC, when the transaction is completed early next year pending regulatory approval. CSX Lines is the nation's largest ocean transport company, with 17 US-flag vessels and 22,000 containers, providing ocean transportation and logistics services to and from the US, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Carlyle's other maritime holdings include Seabulk International, formerly Hvide Marine, which owns and operates 10 Jones Act tankers in the Gulf of Mexico. Through United Defense Industries, Carlyle controls United States Marine Repair, the nation's largest non-nuclear ship repair and conversion company…
John Snow, the CEO of CSX, was appointed Treasury Secretary by the younger President Bush last week.
…and more – they want to get into NUCLEAR SUBMARINES TOO…

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x473813
thread title (2-20-06 GD): Carlyly Group's involvement in port security company
Comment/excerpt: Same main article as the GD-P thread about sale of CSX lines to Carlyle, appointment of former CSX CEO as Sec of Treasury. Reply 24: DUBAI PORT WORLD – THE ONES BUYING THE AMERICAN PORTS – OWN CSX!!! CSX also owns biggest rail in the east, plus trucking.(Reply #30) But Reply #34 says DPW bought the terminal business from CSX for cash and does NOT own CSX, only a business CSX once owned.
Much needs to be clarified, but there are lots of dots there to connect, and it all comes back to sellout by the Bushies for money and to please their MidEast patrons.

31. I am more and more convinced that DK is one of the few remaining
true moral voices in national politics. Wellstone is dead. At least Dennis and Senator Byrd have a voice for the little things: working people, humility, service, Enlightenment and two of the sharpest minds in the country. One elderly and one young. Although each may be often on opposite sides of a single issue, as a tag team in the House and Senate, they are both outstanding men and politicians.

"Run, Dennis, Run!"

33. More action in the "deep democratic tradition"
Is that tradition alive today? IT IS, if Kucinich has anything to say about it.

"Democracy is always a movement of an energized public to make elites responsible--it is at its core and most basic foundation the taking back of one's powers in the face of the misuse of elite power. In this sense, democracy is more a verb than a noun--it is more a dynamic striving and collective movement than a static order or stationary status quo. Democracy is not just a system of governance, as we tend to think of it, but a cultural way of being. This is where the voices of our great democratic truth tellers come in." -- Cornel West

"There is nothing more important in the culture of man than to resist the dangers of commerce." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Nadie come naranjas, bajo la luna llena. Es preciso comer, fruta verde y helada." -- Garcia Lorca

35. It's a good thing
Somebody still has their eyes open. Lord only knows what the hell they might pull. I will say I don't see this contract going to Halliburton unless these morons are looking for a full fledge congressional investigation cuz ain't nobody gonna let that sh*t slide.

I'm just concerned this US company they sell to will be some kind of shell or front that they can hide behind. I say not only should congress pass legislation to stop the deal and give a time line for all critical US infastructure to be turned back/sold back to US firms, but they should also require that the company DPW tries to sell it's port contracts to be investigated by both FBI and Homeland Security (the former being the most pertinent as Homeland is kind of a joke).

getting a "set"? Where in the hell has the "oversight" been up till now? Easily proven impeachable offenses are promulgated daily by this administration and now, now, we have someone standing up and demanding the papers to preform oversight? This maladministration will not release any papers just because some Democrat asks for them. Somehow the repukes will squat on this and it'll disappear.

Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 10:24 AM by blm
it's the THIRD time the media IGNORES the seriousness of the letters.

If we had a media that gave coverage of Kerry's letter to Snow over two weeks ago, and then Dodd's letter to Bush and now Kucinich's, then the WH would feel some pressure to comply. But, they DON'T feel pressure because no media is covering the Dems working to hold Bush accountable.
