We would no longer need Israel to play "bad cop" in the neighborhood, and since we would have to buy instead of steal oil, we'd have to placate the Arab world a little more.

The reason I wonder is the story about the interim prime minister of Israel saying they will draw a permanent border by 2010 along the lines of the wall. While that's far from ideal, it's a step in the right direction and I wonder if it's related to the faltering empire project.

1. no
it`s tribalism and religious hate that fuel the fires. the fires will never go out until good people say no more and demand to live in peace with the people next to them..
through out history the walls of ignorance have been left in ruin and this wall will be no different

2. I disagree. It is not tribalism. It is colonialism, it is oppression.
The final borders described by Olmert will only bring more violence, because it will put Palestinians into small, unlivable Bantustans.

What is happening now is that Israel is joking about the suffering of Palestinians, that they have long endured one of the worst and longest military occupations of the 20th and 21st centuries. While the US talks about human rights and democracy, it does nothing but subsidize this occupation, always defending and paying for Israeli actions.

It is not a problem of "Arabs vs. Jews", it is a problem of an oppressed people seeking their liberation after decades of suffering.

3. True....
And it is the one sidedness that the US takes on in this matter that breeds resentment around the world.

4. my point wasn't that Olmert's proposal was good, but that we would
have less incentive to keep that an open wound.
