we need to be on the lookout for moles/trolls I have a stalker
There are people here the are here to disrupt. They even have stars and high post counts. Then they go to other boards and brag about how they are disrupting. They also capture any information they can to use at a later date. They post on other boards things we say from our heart and use it to try to cause trouble.

I posted a piece of my past that I hardly ever mention to anyone or talk about, got an email from someone trashing me and threatening me and my job because of it.

Now, I don't have any personal info anywhere on this site, so HOW did they get my home/work email?

2. That's scary -- and illegal
Can you ID the PC they sent it from? You can report this to the police in most jurisdictions.

It was a Dem primary foe who thought they could get me in trouble.

Be careful out here - people are cruel.

8. what I shared was from my heart about abortion and my experience
I know they can not get me at my job, and I could care less about what they think, but...I do not have any idea how they got my email addy?

I am careful about what I post. I am a teacher, but I have never talked about where, when or who I teach. I really don't think anyone else knows either.

just want you all to be careful as we are not as faceless as we might think.

17. agreed
some folk disclose a piece here, and a piece there... and some particularly ugly folks will spend time trying to put it together.

I recall a particularly distrubing thread a long time ago - where someone had put together a database per duers - ostensibly for a research project (as in folks were doing joint research on an issue) - so it sounded on the surface okay... but it evoked a pretty ugly image in my mind... of someone picking through threads to catch bits and pieces about specific duers in order to add those items to a spreadsheet or dbase.

6. just be very careful on what you give out
go into your profile and make sure your e-mail is only for the administrators to see and your name as well. If what you say is true and these guys or "ladies" are donating money getting stars, they could access stuff like that i bet. Just becareful who you trust on the internet, my girlfriend's mom was on here for a long time and got burned by some crazy person so it happens alot i think. Also, notify Skinner or one of the admins when it happens so they can kick that person out. Thats what great about DU, you don't have anything nice to say about Dem's your out :)

18. Because the Conservatives post our conversations there.
I, myself, have been quoted there.

What's funny is that my post was nuanced and they simply didn't get it and laughed because it was too high-brow for them.

13. A couple of years ago...
someone called my mother (who's in another state) and told her I would be in trouble if I kept associating with the left-wing group, Democratic Underground. She was freaked, as you might expect. I communicated with Skinner about it and he assured me that he did not give out information in any way (and he doesn't have my mother's name, anyway). I thought about it for a while and concluded that the only place those two things were easily linked was at Citibank. My credit card shows my tiny donation to DU and they have my mother's maiden name somewhere. Citibank, of course, said that they don't do that sort of thing. I didn't think it was official policy but that some low-level wingnut probably was searching records. They didn't have my email and never contacted me.
Be a creative detective and see if you can figure out where the thread leads from here to your email.

32. aha....good detective work
we had an offline stalker who found us years ago. We eventually figured out how he found us and I learned a good lesson--that information usually does not follow the path you think of first.

Too many people have a false sense of security and anonymity about the internet, and their offline life too for that matter. So I want to say, as a stalking victim, to everyone reading this post:

YOU ARE NEVER ANONYMOUS. NEVER.

It is possible to make yourself harder to find. But you can't hide. We need to realize that we already live in a Soviet/China style society and begin conducting ourselves accordingly. It is possible to move, talk, and live freely in this society, as long as you're aware of the possible consequences and ready to accept them.

As the awareness of our current situation sinks in, there will be many who become good germans, thinking that will keep them safe. There will be many who radicalize and throw themselves in front of the (metaphoric) tanks. Neither group will affect change. Those of us who craft a way through this doing neither will be the force of lasting change and reform.

ok, climbing off the soapbox now.

15. Every web site has their disruptors and especially one like DU so.........
....that's something we just have to get used to especially with the boy king screwing up so badly.

The stalking part though is an entirely different story and should be reported to DU staff as soon as possible. There should also be laws in each state, federal laws, and laws with internet providers themselves that make stalking illegal and punishable by law.

So please don't take this without fighting back.

19. Disturbing
not just that they could 'find you' to threaten... but that they think it is their "job" to try to get people fired from their jobs based on differing political viewpoints. That mindset scares me - as it says there are those in our country who would embrace a totalitarian regime.

26. I am hopeful
that as more examples get exposed - that like McCarthyism - many folks wake up and get disturbed... and others start shaming those who act so shamelessly - and eventually this trend/thinking is turned back. Or so I try to tell myself... I try to tell myself that this country has experienced freedom for too long for most people to really condone giving all of it up... as examples come forth that make folks realize that this COULD hit close to home for themselves... that more folks will stand together to shake this form of totalitarian thinking back.

24. Yes, the witch hunt mindset. It could be good to argue to employers
not to react to that kind of thing. I think maybe these people don't realize a lot of employers don't care or would even be supportive. Right wingers tend to assume their opinions are "right" and that anyone in "authority" agrees with them. Such as an "employer."

23. I'm sorry you are having this trouble, but I wish to thank you
for posting about it. I just took some time to rearrange some things on the internet so it would be harder for someone to find my identity. I also googled my username. Very interesting. The first page, thank goodness, was about my webpage and main hobbies; had to get to the second and third pages before I saw some of my comments had been reposted at freakrepublic and that other place. I didn't bother to go to them to read-I won't sully my computer by doing so. Besides, the little bit posted showed me that they only quote me and my posts about Islam, and I'm sure anyone here could imagine what their comments were. I would recommend that folks google their names from time to time, if only to see who is copying their posts to other sites. Luckily, no one could email my mother, as she doesn't own a computer and doesn't know how to run one, and neither does my boss. But the type of harrassment you describe is illegal, I believe. Report it.

34. Their philosophy is the ends justify the means.
Look at those good Christian men Ralph Reed and James Dobson-tied to the Abramoff/gambling thing. They will end up justifying that as okay, because in the end they will be able to take over the country for God. Just watch and see. In the meantime, we do need to be extra vigilant. I am going to go Google my screen name now. God save us from the hypocrites of the world! I would also add that since they seem to spend so much time watching us, it can only mean that we are a threat to their plans. That is kinda funny! :kick:

36. Watch yourself...
Me, I'm not that hard to track if someone wants to do it. My "secret identity" isn't all that secret. I'm an author and all of this is part of what I do. They'd find it very hard to disrupt MY life.

To tell you the truth, I'm surprised I haven't heard from the wingnuts yet. I keep encouraging them to buy my books so they know what to protest, specifically, but I'm not sure it's taking.

You, on the other hand, keep your head down and your eyes open.
