Dean accuses GOP of 'pre-9/11 mindset'
WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Republicans have a "pre-9/11 mindset" regarding security at U.S. seaports.

"Dean was giving his party credit for stopping a deal in which an Arab company was to take over management of several U.S. ports. Even though the Bush administration stressed security matters would remain in the hands of the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs agents, Congress said it would stop the agreement.

"We need to do more to ensure the security of our ports," Dean said in the Democrats' weekly radio address. "It's unacceptable that five years after 9/11, only 6 percent of cargo coming into America's ports is inspected. Republicans have shown a pre-9/11 mindset when it comes to closing the gaps in our security at our ports."

Dean said Republicans in Congress stopped efforts by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., to get "long overdue funding for adequate port security."

4. Not only is this good politically,
it is an important point to make in regards to our national security. If, God forbid, we have some sort of attack come in via the ports, the fault will lie at the Republican's feet.

28. I Think Lou Dobbs Also Confirmed That!
ONE PERCENT!

For ElSmirkle-Roy to stand up and say that we need to keep our "friends" in the Middle East is nothing less than IDIOTIC! Why is it that so few people don't point to the fact that it was HE who started the "FEAR" MONGERING in the first place??? How many times have we been told that we "need to fight them over there?"

Why aren't more people sticking him with how he PREACHED this sermon over and over. And then he seems surprised that the citizens here would be DUBIOUS ABOUT DUBAI!

I don't think there is a low that can even begin to describe how down-right LOW he is??

10. In the radio address he attacked the deficit as well.
"On another issue, Dean assailed Bush for running up the U.S. debt by $3 trillion during his tenure, contending that amounts to another security crisis.

"One of the implications of this increased debt is that increasingly, foreigners are financing this debt, putting the American economy in the hands of foreign debt holders, just like the ports deal would have put port security in the hands of a foreign-owned government," Dean said.

Dean said the Democrats will oppose budgets that deepen the deficit."

27. heard Schumer speak - he, too, had $$ requests denied by repuke Congress
for more port security. Said it would take about $1 billion to get ports secure---I don't remember if he was speaking of all ports or just NY ports---and Congress apprpriated only $50 million . Schumer said they never completely deny requests but most of money is going to Iraq War and not to domestic security.

Way to go, Dean!

36. Ports Deal
Regarding the assurance by the current American regime that port "security" would be/remain the responsibility of Americans... Sorry, but somehow that does not inspire a great deal of confidence.
