another dead body found in an attic

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/03/06/katrina.bodies/index.html

Katrina victim's body found in attic
Searchers resume operations, expect to find up to 400 missing

Three days after officials inspected a storm-damaged home spray-painted with "0" -- indicating no bodies inside -- cadaver dogs led searchers to a victim of Hurricane Katrina in the attic.

Before dying, the man apparently was trying to crawl out of an air-conditioning vent to escape rising floodwaters, said Dr. Louis Cataldie, Louisiana's medical examiner.

Cataldie said searchers expect to find up to 400 more bodies of storm victims still hidden inside New Orleans homes six months after the storm.

Cataldie said Monday that cadaver-searching dogs are critical to the search and recovery missions. (Watch cadaver dogs scour buildings -- :47)

"Obviously my concern is we could clear a house and determine there's no body inside," he said. "So it's important to get these dog teams in before any debris is removed."

As part of the new hunt for victims that began last week, cadaver dogs helped discover the body Sunday in a rental home in the Lakeview area -- a mostly white, middle-class neighborhood near the 17th Street Canal levee that failed the day of the hurricane.

I am starting to think that we not only need to speak out for impeachment but also for criminal charges. How can these evil people in charge of our country allow these travesties to continue and the only response is another fucking photo op for el pretzeldente? I guess he DID have a hammer in his hand for this one. So it's all good, eh? :grr:

i try to keep checking the local news but i haven't seen anything

the state is broke, orleans parish is broke, both lakeview and 9th ward are in orleans and lakeview was a HUGE part of the tax revenue of orleans, lots of rich and upper middle class neighborhoods there that have been wiped off the map, in addition to the businesses that served the neighborhoods

with help of family reports, cataldie has identified 300 to 400 people who were last seen in those neighborhoods shortly before the storm, who are almost certainly dead, but there comes a time when he actually needs personnel, dogs, and equipment to find the remains

the couple i know that died in gentilly, their son found them himself actually, he went in even before the water went down in his boat and found them, then notified the authorities -- and it still took months to get their names on the official toll and processed thru the coroner's office, it was a horrible thing, unfortunately, many of our elderly can't take the stress of a long drive in the heat and were unwilling to evacuate and they trusted levees which had always held in the past, what makes this story most sad is that the son went by the day before and tried to force his parents to leave in his car, but you can't force your elders to do what they don't want to do, they assume they are older and wiser

:-(

11. Congress can appropriate funds for this effort. Why haven't they?
It's six months later, and what has Congress done? We KNOW the Bush administration won't do anything to find the bodies, they want to hide these bodies as they do the bodies of the troops and the Iraqi death toll. Someone adult and not criminally attempting to hide the results of their crimes needs to step in.

Is anyone representing these people at all? Even third world countries take care of their dead ~ we are now officially worse than a third world country!!

This truly is an outrage!! To not pay for the necessary tools to find the bodies of US citizens who were victims of a major disaster. And they want to desroy all those houses ~ one more incredible outrage resulting from two stolen elections and the appointment of a gang of a criminals whose only interest in this country is to use it as a bank for their foreign ventures ~

15. i think they have but there's a claim of a screw-up
Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 01:03 PM by pitohui
FEMA claims some piece of paper had to be signed that wasn't signed or some such happy bureaucratic bullshit, meanwhile the hotel is not getting paid so they evict the team from their room, you are not going to let folks WITH DOGS stay for free in a place where hotel space is at a premium

i suspect the real issue is that FEMA is deliberately being obstructionist because they bill the state of louisiana 25 percent of the costs and as we have no money we have not paid these bills since you can't get blood from a turnip

instead of taking care of business now and working out a way to fund the matter later, whether by selling bonds, windfall taxes on oil or what have you, the federal gov't prefers to be vindictive toward the state

my opinion only of why this is happening

all FEMA had to do, in my opinion, was to state in ADVANCE that there would be a problem with housing the team, and i guarantee lots of people would have stepped up to offer space

16. Thanks for that explanation ~ then Congress needs to step in again
imo. They need to appoint a committee that oversees FEMA which is now totally compromised. As you say, it's entirely possible they are obstructing the efforts themselves, as they did throughout this disaster. Why are they still allowed to make any decisions at all?

And there should be NO cost to the people of NO. What about all the donations people sent, billions of dollars!! I think taxpayers would have wanted the entire cost of finding the bodies of those who were lost, covered ~ just my opinion.

What other country comes up with so many excuses for treating their dead this way, other than dictatorships.

It seems to me they are doing what they do because NO ONE is yelling loud enough at them. Like Bush telling Brownie he did a great job until the outrage was so huge, he had to get rid of him. No more excuses, they spent millions of dollars on the finding and identifying the dead of 9/11, as was proper (although now I think, political) If they could do it then, they can do it now! There has been way too much tolerance of these criminals, and as long as there is they will keep doing what they do.

17. what the dog handlers said...
The FEMA person wanted them to sign papers saying they were long-term displaced evacuees and they refused. Makes me wonder how much of those exorbitant hotel bills were really covering relief workers, not evacuees. And their dog was the one who find the corpse in the air duct on the first day they were there.

and he actually hung a light in a home of some folks in Pascagoula, he really, really cares, he actually hammered and everything. :sarcasm:

These bastards, what can be said that hasn't already been said about their neglect? The frustration and anger and tears over the last 6 months just won't ease up. They don't want it to.

That they have still not even recovered all the bodies.

Six months later.

Absolutely shameful.

will have a notice on someone who died "on or about 29 August 2005" with a memorial service to be held at a future date. Sad sad sad.
